Book Description
LE BUT DE CE TRAVAIL EST DE DEFINIR UNE METHODE DE CONCEPTION ET D'ETABLIR LES PRINCIPES DU PROCESSUS DE REALISATION D'UNE DIODE LASER A RUBAN VSIS GAALAS QUI PUISSE ETRE L'ELEMENT DE BASE DE DISPOSITIFS OU DE CIRCUITS INTEGRES OPTOELECTRONIQUES. IL EST PROPOSE UNE MODELISATION DE CES COMPOSANTS QUI PREND EN COMPTE LE CONFINEMENT OPTIQUE LATERAL ET TRANSVERSAL ET LA REPARTITION BIDIMENSIONNELLE DES LIGNES DE COURANT. SUR CETTE BASE, IL EST DEVELOPPE UNE METHODE DE CONCEPTION DU TRIPLE POINT DE VUE DU GUIDAGE PAR L'INDICE, DE LA DISCRIMINATION DES MODES LATERAUX, DE LA VALEUR DU COURANT DE SEUIL. CES RESULTATS SONT ILLUSTRES PAR LA DEFINITION DES PERFORMANCES LIMITES DE CE TYPES DE COMPOSANTS. LES TECHNIQUES DE REALISATION DE DIODES LASER A RUBAN VSIS GAALAS PAR EPITAXIE EN PHASE LIQUIDE SONT DECRITES, ET LES PROPRIETES DE PLUSIEURS SERIES DE DISPOSITIFS SONT ANALYSEES. UN DISPOSITIF OPTOELECTRONIQUE INTEGRE ORIGINAL: L'AMPLIFICATEUR DE LUMIERE BILAS CONSTITUE PAR UNE DIODE LASER A RUBAN VSIS ET UN PHOTOTRANSISTOR A HETEROJONCTION EST PRESENTE. UNE ANALYSE GLOBALE DES PERFORMANCES DE CELUI-CI EST EFFECTUEE

Book Description
The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Book Description
This classic monograph on unsteady transonic flow — the flow of air encountered at speeds at or near the speed of sound — is of continuing interest to students and professionals in aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, and other areas of applied mathematics. After a brief Introduction, Swedish physicist Mårten T. Landahl presents a chapter in which the two-dimensional solution is derived, succeeded by a discussion of its relation to the subsonic and supersonic solutions. Three chapters on low aspect ratio configurations follow, covering triangular wings and similar planforms with curved leading edges, rectangular wings, and cropped delta wings, and low aspect ratio wing-body combinations. The treatment concludes with a consideration of the experimental determination of air forces on oscillating wings at transonic speeds.

Book Description
Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis· seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac· tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 20 (thesis year 1975) a total of 10,374 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 239 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 20 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.
