The work of Miguel de Cervantes – one of the most influential writers in early modern Europe – is a reflection of the rich culture of memory in which it was created. More than a theme, memory is a system of understanding in Cervantes’s world, resulting from the major social, religious, and economic changes that epitomized Renaissance humanist culture and that informed the transition to modernity. Quixotic Memories offers insight into the plurality and complexity of memory and demonstrates how it plays an exceptionally critical role in Cervantes’s Don Quixote. Silvia Roig explores the narrative of Aurora Bertrana (1892-1974), an unknown writer today, but a successful and recognized female author in Catalonia and Spain during the 20th century. Aurora Bertrana's works are almost never mentioned in manuals of literature. Her rich, intellectual work has not received the attention it deserves, relegated almost to absolute oblivion. The author reviews and studies twenty-four of Bertrana's novels written in Catalan andSpanish, including: Ariatea (1960), El pomell de les violes (MS), L'inefable Philip (MS), La aldea sin hombres (mn.), La madrecita de los cerdos (MS), Entre dos silencis (1958), La ninfa d'argila (1959), Fracàs (1966) and La ciutat dels joves: reportatge fantasia (1971). She studies her work, published and unpublished, from a feminist approach, taking into account the intellectual history of Spain and Catalonia. Bertana's strong commitment to social issues reveals her association with the Modernist and Noucentists trends of her time. Bertrana's novels reveal a unique interest in non-Western cultures and lifestyles and her work undertakes controversial topics and socio-cultural issues, while she observes and draws special attention to the situation of women in different circumstances and cultural geographies. This book is therefore anchored on interpretive and theoretical parameters that intersect with consideration of gender, such as travel-and-gender and war-and-gender. Roig uses the work of feminists such as Simone De Beauvoir, Shulamith Firestone, Jelke Boesten, Margaret and Patrice Higonnet, Michelle Zimbalist Rosaldo and Julia Kristeva to help assess Bertrana's engagement with gender and socio-political issues. Cumandá es una novela fundadora de la narrativa ecuatoriana, y es también heredera ejemplar de la tradición romántica latinoamericana. A su manera, le da continuidad y la reorganiza. Así el amor imposible de una india y un blanco se engarza con la figura del buen salvaje. Juntos abren el universo sublime y misterioso de la selva. No falta la intriga, tampoco asombro. En Cumandá están los ecos de esas mujeres imaginadas en María de Jorge Isaacs, en Cecilia Valdés de Cirilo Villaverde o en Amalia de José Marmol. En los cuerpos de esos personajes literarios se pergeñaban proyectos biopolíticos y programas civilizatorios. También encontramos un diálogo con los textos de los exploradores, a la vez admirados y aterrados, frente a la naturaleza americana. Se dialoga además con las crónicas del Nuevo Mundo y las Tradiciones. Esas ingeniosas reconstrucciones del pasado que Ricardo Palmallevó a su cúspide. No son menos interesantes los modos en que Juan León Mera impugna las teorías sobre la inferioridad del indio. Aquí se cuestiona a Buffon, Montesquieu, Robertson, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento o José Ingenieros. A la vez pone en jaque todas aquellas concepciones de origen roussoniano, que enarbolaban al indio como un otro deseado. Se cuestiona la idea del idea del indio como estandarte que asegura el sueño colonial de América como un lugar ideal, virgen e impoluto. Queda por decidir si Cumandá se ubica a caballo entre una corriente indianista que insiste en una imagen exótica, decorativa y folclórica del indio, y otra corriente indigenista que lo pone en el centro del escenario, le da voz y se hace eco de su complejo universo cultural. En todo caso, esta novela reúne muchas de las preguntas que acompañan y aún acompañan el devenir de Ecuador y de América Latina.
