Excerpt from Memoranda of Foreign Travel In submitting the present volume to the public, a brief explanation appears to be necessary. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United Stales of America, appointed the Author its Representative to certain churches in Great Britain; upon which Mission he left his native country in the spring of the year 1836. The result of a portion of his tour in Europe, consequent upon that appointment, is given in the following pages. As soon as circumstances will permit, it is proposed to issue a second volume, on England, Scotland, and Ireland; and after that, a third, devoted entirely to France, especially the south of France and the general interests of that mighty kingdom. Each of these volumes is entirely independent of both the others; though in a certain sense they form one whole, and were at first intended to have been issued together. In that case the present volume would have been the second of the series. It is now issued first, only because being complete in itself and in a greater state of forwardness than either of the others, no sufficient reason for longer delay occurs to the author. The more especially as the proper duties of his station, of which literary employment is a relaxation and not a business, might in time to come, as in time past, have imperceptibly lengthened out weeks of delay into months, and months into years.
