Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of the Queens of Spain, Vol. 1: From the Period of the Conquest of the Goths to the Accession of Her Present Majesty Isabella II., With the Remarkable Events That Occurred During Their Respective Reigns, and Anecdotes of Their Several Courts While giving such details of the lives of the female sovereigns as the records of their times afford, I have endeavoured to maintain unbroken the connecting links between each reign, sketching the history of Spain from the time of the invasion of the Goths down to the present day. Of the earlier portion of that period, we possess but meagre, contradictory, and unsatisfactory records, and those disfigured'by the exaggerations and fables of a superstitious age. Of many of the Queens, little save the name remains to rescue their memory from the sea of oblivion. Of others, again, we find even the existence disputed. But, as we approach the fourteenth century, the materials of the historian become gradually more copious, and the chronicles abound with well authenti cated traits of the generosity, the romantic valour, the devoted loyalty for which the sons of chivalric Iberia have ever been so eminently distinguished. Book Description
A major biography of the queen who transformed Spain into a principal global power, and sponsored the voyage that would open the New World. In 1474, when Castile was the largest, strongest, and most populous kingdom in Hispania (present day Spain and Portugal), a twenty-three-year-old woman named Isabella ascended the throne. At a time when successful queens regnant were few and far between, Isabella faced not only the considerable challenge of being a young, female ruler in an overwhelmingly male-dominated world, but also of reforming a major European kingdom riddled with crime, debt, corruption, and religious factionism. Her marriage to Ferdinand of Aragon united two kingdoms, a royal partnership in which Isabella more than held her own. Their pivotal reign was long and transformative, uniting Spain and setting the stage for its golden era of global dominance. Acclaimed historian Giles Tremlett chronicles the life of Isabella of Castile as she led her country out of the murky Middle Ages and harnessed the newest ideas and tools of the early Renaissance to turn her ill-disciplined, quarrelsome nation into a sharper, truly modern state with a powerful, clear-minded, and ambitious monarch at its center. With authority and insight he relates the story of this legendary, if controversial, first initiate in a small club of great European queens that includes Elizabeth I of England, Russia's Catherine the Great, and Britain's Queen Victoria.

Book Description
Excerpt from A Queen of Queens, and the Making of Spain The very name is an Open Sesame to the world Of romance, Of legend and Of story and as we gaze upon it, our minds are flooded with dim enthralling memories of a long-vanished past. The magic Spell is upon us. Once more we are in the unforgotten land Of Spanish chivalry and Moorish enchantment, where every tale Of prince and paladin, Of feast and foray; every vision Of stately rock-girt castle, Of fairy palace, Of dome and minaret - set in a fair garden land Of exquisite beauty passing a poet's dream - all combine to form the emblazoned tapestry on which stands forth the gracious figure Of our peer less lady Isabel the Queen.
