"My dear Lord Haddo," wrote his old friend Dr. Christopher Wordsworth, "although your recent Motion in the House of Commons did not meet with the support which it deserved, yet I trust that it will not have been without effect: and at least you will have the satisfaction of having done what was right, and having encountered obloquy in a good cause." Somewhat later a Number of the Churchman (a High Church periodical) was sent him; in which the writer, speaking on the same subject, expressed his difference in toto from Mr. Gladstone, ' and agreement with Lord Haddo. The Caleolonian Mercury also had a most vigorous leading article to the same effect, written, it. was believed, by Dr. Guthrie. The shrinking delicacy of his nature, as before intimated, made the whole subject most repugnant to him; and nothing but a strong sense of duty could have induced him to take it up. ' CHAPTER XIII.
