Book Description
Excerpt from Memoir of George Boardman Boomer I desire to offer an apology for so long delaying the accomplishment of this little volume. One reason has been already assigned, the lack of material; the other is kindred to it, the want of time. In days like ours, when women must work for their country while their loved ones fight for it, private claims for time must be laid aside. I am aware that this simple narrative has little merit. It is only hoped that the reader will see an earnest, honest, upright purpose in this life, so poorly portrayed. The world is more powerfully affected by one true life than by many theories and principles. The one is an ideal, the other a reality; the one is a precept which appeals to the understanding, the other an example which touches the heart, strengthens the hopes, and kindles with new ardor the purposes of the soul. Book Description
Excerpt from Life and Letters of Rev. George Boardman Taylor, D. D About thirty years ago I spent a winter in Rome and for the first time met the Rev. Dr. George B. Taylor. I was sick in a strange city, and he visited me. I began then to realize how rich is the incidental ministry which the foreign missionary can perform to his own countrymen, whom he chances to find in need and pain, like ships that pass in the night. From that time his life touched mine at different points, and I ever learned more deeply to admire his strenuous and abstemious nature. There could hardly be a more perfect blending of saint, scholar and gentleman. I used to attend his Sunday services, and the vision of his pale but glowing features and his delicate frame, protected by a gray shawl against the tomb-like chilliness of the locale where his disciples met, will never fade away from my remembrance. When the English troops made their famous charge up Spion Kop, attaining its summit only to be swept down by the murderous cross-fire of the Boers, they had left Major Ross in camp weak and unable to walk. But we are told that rumors of the desperate conflict in which his regiment was involved must have reached the hospital tent in which the sick man lay, for at three o'clock that afternoon the orderly reported that his bed was empty. Book Description
Excerpt from Memoir of the Rev. George Burder From the importance and the extent of the sphere of Christian activity, in which, during a long course of years, it was the happiness of my revered Father to move, some Memoirs of his Life may be naturally and reasonably expected. The mournful yet deeply interesting task of preparing these for the press has devolved on me, as the eldest son, at the request of my dear brothers. To my own mind it is not only a welcome relief, but a source of inexpressible satisfaction, to be able to present to the Christian public, Memoirs which, though brief, are comprehensive and characteristic, from my beloved Father's own pen. It does not indeed appear that they were intended to meet the eye. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
