La educación médica es el proceso para la formación de los médicos, subordinado a las estructuras económicas y sociales dominantes en las sociedades en las cuales se lleva a cabo; por consiguiente, no puede estar disociado de la realidad social. Es indudable que el sistema de salud requiere cambios fundamentales; sin embargo, las reformas a la enseñanza y al aprendizaje de la medicina continúan basándose en una visión biologista del proceso salud-enfermedad. Es indispensable un nuevo paradigma, y este debe introducir tres cambios: 1) el concepto del proceso salud-enfermedad, que jebe partir de que este es primariamente un proceso social y cultural dentro del cual se insertan lo biológico y lo psicológico. Lo anterior implica repensar para qué se enseña, a fin de que los educandos contribuyan a aumentar, de manera integrada, el bienestar de la población en la cual intervienen; 2) cómo se aprende, y para ello el proceso educativo debería estar estructurado sobre la comprensión, y 3) cómo se enseña, basándose primordialmente en el diseño e implementación de un currículo basado en resultados de aprendizaje.
