Book Description
This compilation of 740 quotations of medical interest grew out of a thorough reading and re-reading of William Shakespeare’s 38 plays, 154 sonnets, and the several long poems. The emotional and physical problems of his characters are frequently mentioned in the plays, and disease and remedy are often used as metaphor to clarify non-medical situations. Although the science of Medicine has changed enormously in recent times, the humanistic aspects have not. Shakespeare’s comments on illness and its effects are still quite pertinent. His unique insight, archaic style, and creative language bring a certain freshness and charm to our continuing contemplation of the art of Medicine. Dr. Foster’s limited interspersed comments are meant to provide a background picture of Elizabethan times and Medicine and, where needed, to remind the reader of the setting of the quotation in the plays and poems.

Book Description
Excerpt from Medical Thoughts of Shakespeare If any old lady, knight, priest or physician, Should condemn me for writing a second edition; If good Madam Squintum my work should abuse, May I venture to give her a smack of my muse? Anstey's New Bath Guide. p. 169. The occasion is taken to acknowledge the kind consideration that the first edition of this little work has received. This edition appears in a thoroughly revised and much enlarged form; to what extent, may be judged by the fact that chapters on The Physician, Surgery, Physiology, Anatomy and Pharmacy have been added, together with many allusions to the other medical subjects, making an increase of over four hundred quotations. It has been impossible to resist the temptation of adding a few medical thoughts from other authors, which will be found under their appropriate heads. The labor necessary to accomplish this has not interfered in any way with professional duties: it being a task entirely of the leisure hours of the night. Book Description
Physicians, readers and scholars have long been fascinated by Shakespeare's medical language and the presence of healers, wise women and surgeons in his work. This dictionary includes entries about ailments, medical concepts, cures and, taking into account recent critical work on the early modern body, bodily functions, parts, and pathologies in Shakespeare. Shakespeare's Medical Language will provide a comprehensive guide for those needing to understand specific references in the plays, in particular, archaic diagnoses or therapies ('choleric', 'tub-fast') and words that have changed their meanings ('phlegmatic', 'urinal'); those who want to learn more about early modern medical concepts ('elements', 'humors'); and those who might have questions about the embodied experience of living in Shakespeare's England. Entries reveal what terms and concepts might mean in the context of Shakespeare's plays, and the significance that a particular disease, body part or function has in individual plays and the Shakespearean corpus at large.
