Below are some of the main findings of the 2007 edition of Measuring Labour Markets in Canada and the United States. [...] In addition to the measurement of each indicator, each section presents a review of the research into the effects of the characteristic or regulation on labour market performance. [...] For instance, unemployment tends to be higher where the power of unions is greater and where they can use their power to set wages too high relative to workers' productivity.2 Specifically, the authors found that changes in union density explained around 19 percent of the rise in European unemployment from the 1960s to the first half of the 1990s.
