This paper describes a measurement of the mass and of the width of two neutral narrow resonances D1° and D*2°, both composed of a charm quark and an up antiquark. The difference with respect to the well-known resonance D°, also neutral and with the same quark composition, is that the two quarks have an orbital momentum 1, which increases their binding energy. Therefore the mass is larger than that of the D°. Since the relative orientation of the spin is the same, in the limit of very large charm mass, the masses of these resonances should be the same; their small difference is predicted by theory and therefore important to measurement to distinguish the different models. These states have been observed in their decay into a kaon and three pions; two of these particles are required to originate from a displaced vertex with respect to the primary interaction vertex, to account for the longer lifetime of the charmed mesons. The resonances parameters have been extracted using a fitting procedure accounting for the expected resonance shape, including effects from detector resolution and background, providing a new best single measurement of the D1° and D*2° masses and a competitive measurement of their widths.

Results of the first measurement of {sup 3}P orbitally excited neutral D-meson states, D*{sub 2}{sup 0} and D{sub 1}{sup 0}, produced in hadron collisions at the Tevatron are presented. Using data from the displaced track trigger, CDF II collects a large sample of these states in decay modes D*{sup +} {pi}{sup -}, D{sup +} {pi}{sup -}. Using a large data sample of p{bar p} collisions at {radical}s = 1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF and D0 detectors operating at Fermilab Tevatron, the orbitally excited B mesons B{sub 1} and B*{sub 2} are observed directly as two separate states in fully reconstructed decays to B{sup (*)}{pi}. The masses and the mass differences between the states are presented. In the charm system, the orbitally excited D mesons D{sub 1} and D*{sub 2} are observed in fully reconstructed decays to D{sup (*)}{pi}. Measurements of the product branching rates of semileptonic decays B {yields} {bar D}**{mu}{sup +}{nu}{sub {mu}}X and their ratio are presented. They also present the observation of the semileptonic decays B{sub s} {yields} {mu}{nu}D**{sub s} where the excited D**{sub s} states are reconstructed in the mode D**{sub s} {yields} D*K{sub S}{sup 0}.

The authors report a measurement of resonance parameters of the orbitally excited (L = 1) narrow B° mesons in decays to B{sup (*)+}?− using 1.7 fb−1 of data collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The mass and width of the B*2° state are measured to be m(B*2°) = 5740.2{sub -1.8}{sup +1.7}(stat.){sub -0.8}{sup +0.9}(syst.) MeV/c2 and?(B*2°) = 22.7{sub -3.2}{sup +3.8}(stat.){sub -10.2}{sup +3.2}(syst.) MeV/c2. The mass difference between the B*2° and B1° states is measured to be 14.9{sub -2.5}{sup +2.2}(stat.){sub -1.4}{sup +1.2}(syst.) MeV/c2, resulting in a B1° mass of 5725.3{sub -2.2}{sup +1.6}(stat.){sub -1.5}{sup +1.4}(syst.) MeV/c2. This is currently the most precise measurement of the masses of these states and the first measurement of the B*2° width.

The decay width and mass of the D{sub s1}(2536) meson are measured via the decay channel D{sub s1}+ 2!D*+ K{sub S}° using 385 fb−1 of data recorded with the BABAR detector in the vicinity of the [Upsilon](4S) resonance at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The result for the decay width is [Gamma](D{sub s1}+) = 0.92 ± 0.03 (stat.) ± 0.04 (syst.)MeV. For the mass, a value of m(D{sub s1}+) = 2535.08 ± 0.01 (stat.) ± 0.15 (syst.)MeV/c2 is obtained. The mass difference between the D{sub s1}+ and the D*+ is measured to be m(D{sub s1}+)-m(D*+) = 524.83 ± 0.01 (stat.) ± 0.04 (syst.)MeV/c2, representing a significant improvement compared to the current world average. The unnatural spin-parity assignment for the D{sub s1}+ meson is confirmed.
