Patterns of symmetry can be found everywhere, in nature and in design. Square dancing is an example of something created to be symmetric: in square dancing we have eight dancers divided into four couples who start positioned on the edges of a square. Throughout the dance, every individual has a corresponding opposite, whose position is rotationally symmetric in relation to the centermost point in the square. This occurs because square dancing calls are transformations that maintain symmetries. We can use mathematics to classify and analyze those symmetries as rotations or reflections. We can also use mathematics to measure how symmetric and asymmetric an object is. This research classifies the different asymmetries that can occur in square dancing as well as examines how inherently symmetric movement can resolve asymmetric formations in square dancing.
