Flow and water quality data (starting in 1976) have been collected, analyzed, and plotted at nine USGS gaging stations in the Sandusky River of northern Ohio for several storm events. A procedure has been developed whereby the water as it travels downstream is followed. The calculational procedure is further expanded to include the tracing of conservative water chemistry as it moves downstream. Thus, at a downstream station it is possible to predict such water quality parameters and compare them with their measured values. The conservative substances such as chlorides and conductivity compared well-- such substances indicating these are not conservative and that deposition and resuspension occur in various reaches of the stream. Further, the methodology permits the estimation of the fractions of these substances at a given downstream station which are derived from various upstream sources. Various factors such as point sources, river flow rate, etc., are discussed as to how they affect the transport of total phosphorus, suspended solids, chlorides, conductivity, the nitrogen species, and other water quality parameters. Coastal aquatic environments are complex and dynamic systems that are influenced by both marine and terrestrial processes such as waves, tides, winds and freshwater discharge. Rivers are conduits that transport freshwater and terrestrially derived particulate and dissolved material such as sediment and dissolved organic matter (DOM) to the coastal ocean. Increased concentrations of these in-water constituents can negatively influence aquatic biota. Storm events and associated rainfall often lead to increases in the amount of terrestrial material delivered to coastal waters, however varying storm characteristics such as the location and intensity of rainfall within a river basin results in varying impacts to hydrology and material transport. Due to the dynamic nature of coastal waters, the monitoring of material transport solely by using traditional field measurements proves difficult over large areas and especially during and following storm events where the collection of field samples is often not possible. To offset this limitation, an integrated method incorporating field sampling, numerical modeling, and remote sensing was used to monitor the transport and distribution of terrestrially derived material from the Neuse River basin to the Neuse River and Neuse River Estuary (NRE) following Hurricane Irene in August 2011. Field samples were used to quantitatively characterize changes in the concentration of total suspended matter (TSM), colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and salinity in the Neuse River and NRE; numerical modeling was used to simulate the transport and distribution of freshwater and DOC throughout the NRE; and remote sensing was used to provide unique large-scale synoptic views of suspended sediment following the storm. This integrated method was adequate in providing the spatial and temporal resolution needed to examine the land-water processes that govern the transport of material through this coupled land-estuary system. This methodology may be applicable to similar estuarine systems and can help better characterize flow and transport during and following storm events.

The research work contained in this report concerns the transport of total phosphorus and orthophosphorus to Lake Erie. The various calculational techniques for analyzing data obtained from Lake Erie tributaries are presented. These calculations were developed to determine the source of the phosphorus and to quantify the input to the lake. The source and quantity of phosphorus devised for Lake Erie. The first section of this report presents the basic concepts, mass balances (that applied to the water and that applied to the phosphorus), and force relationships. The second section of this report concerns the quantification of total phosphorus input to Lake Erie river basins and shortline sources. A computational method called the Flow Interval Method was devised to permit the calculaion of total phosphorus influx without measuring the total phosphorus concentration for the entire year. Another important aspect of reducing total phosphorus influx from river basins is the understanding of the transport processes in rivers. The third section of this report concerns the transport of total phosphorus during storm events. The fourth section of this report presents the derivation of the necessary equations used to calculate the distance of the travel density function form measurements of the water flow rate and the total phosphorus concentrations at a point in the stream.
