Unhappily married couples living in Virginia between 1730 and the year of the first absolute divorce in 1802, had very few means of redressing a bad marriage. They might choose to remain unhappily married, face the public humiliation of extralegal separation, or the likely denial of a divorce petition to the Virginia Legislative Assembly. The public nature of marriage is evident in that the community policed private issues of morality, and divorce was seen as both a personally and socially destructive force. This thesis offers a systematic study of changes in gender roles and marriage that led to the increased acceptance of divorce in late eighteenth-century Virginia. During this time period, Virginia underwent a series of transformations that altered the ways in which men and women related to one another within the confines of marriage. A variety of political, religious, economic, and philosophical motivations initiated the transformation. In looking at the changing nature of marriage, gender roles, and divorce in colonial and early republic Virginia, this research reveals both the changes and continuities in political and social ideology, as well as in personal and family relationships.

"Although the friendship between George Washington and James Madison was eclipsed in the early 1790s by the alliances of Madison with Jefferson and Washington with Hamilton, their collaboration remains central to the constitutional revolution that launched the American experiment in republican government. Washington relied heavily on Madison's advice, pen, and legislative skill, while Madison found Washington's prestige indispensable for achieving his goals for the new nation. Together, Stuart Leibiger argues, Washington and Madison struggled to conceptualize a political framework that would respond to the majority without violating minority rights. Stubbornly refusing to sacrifice either of these objectives, they cooperated in helping to build and implement a powerful, extremely republican constitution. Observing Washington and Madison in light of their special relationship, Leibiger argues against a series of misconceptions about the two men. Madison emerges as neither a strong nationalist of the Hamiltonian variety nor a political consolidationist; he did not retreat from nationalism to states' rights in the 1790s, as other historians have charged.
