The land between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan Valley has been one of the most disputed territories in history. Since the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, Palestinians and Israelis have each sought claim to the national identity of the land through various martial, social, and scientific tactics, but no method has offered as much legitimacy and national controversy as that of the map. The Politics of Maps delves beneath the battlefield to unearth the cartographic strife behind the Israel/Palestine conflict. Blending science and technology studies, sociology, and geography with a host of archival material, in-depth interviews and ethnographies, this book explores how the geographical sciences came to be entangled with the politics, territorial claim-making, and nation-state building of Israel/Palestine. Chapters chart the cartographic history of the region, from the introduction of Western scientific and legal paradigms that seemingly legitimized and depoliticized new land regimes to the rise of new mapping technologies and software that expanded access to cartography into the public sphere. Maps produced by various sectors like the "peace camps" or the Jewish community enhanced national belonging, while others, like that of the Green Line, served largely to divide. The stories of Israel's many boundaries reveal that there is no absolute, technocratic solution to boundary-making. As boundaries continue to be controversial and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict remains intractable and unresolved, The Politics of Maps uses nationally-based cartographic discourses to provide insight into the complexity, fissures, and frictions within internal political debates, illuminating the persistent power of the nation-state as a framework for forging identities, citizens, and alliances.

Digital practices in social and political landscapes: Why two researchers can look at the same feature and see different things. Maps are widely believed to be objective, and data-rich computer-made maps are iconic examples of digital knowledge. It is often claimed that digital maps, and rational boundaries, can solve political conflict. But in Mapping Israel, Mapping Palestine, Jess Bier challenges the view that digital maps are universal and value-free. She examines the ways that maps are made in Palestine and Israel to show how social and political landscapes shape the practice of science and technology. How can two scientific cartographers look at the same geographic feature and see fundamentally different things? In part, Bier argues, because knowledge about the Israeli military occupation is shaped by the occupation itself. Ongoing injustices—including checkpoints, roadblocks, and summary arrests—mean that Palestinian and Israeli cartographers have different experiences of the landscape. Palestinian forms of empirical knowledge, including maps, continue to be discounted. Bier examines three representative cases of population, governance, and urban maps. She analyzes Israeli population maps from 1967 to 1995, when Palestinian areas were left blank; Palestinian state maps of the late 1990s and early 2000s, which were influenced by Israeli raids on Palestinian offices and the legacy of British colonial maps; and urban maps after the Second Intifada, which show how segregated observers produce dramatically different maps of the same area. The geographic production of knowledge, including what and who are considered scientifically legitimate, can change across space and time. Bier argues that greater attention to these changes, and to related issues of power, will open up more heterogeneous ways of engaging with the world.

Introduction The basic obligations of a state towards its nation(s) are to provide Justice, control of powers - of organizations or individuals - peace, advancement of understanding - including science - and economy. Freedom, although essential, is secondary and a consequence of justice and control of powers. Since its creation in 1948, Israel under Zionism - Jewish Nationalism by reliance on international power(s) - has become a state of “abuse of powers, inherited from world powers”, a “place of anti-humanity acts, against the humane formal principles that it was founded on”, and a prophet of “transfer - forced migration - of the nations who helped its people to be transferred” in the region. In short, an inconsistency in the consistent humanity that arose from that region. There is a new enlightenment in the world, however, due to post era realities of the events: “end of the cold war”, “fall of the Soviet Union”, “Christian revolution in Poland”, “Islamic revolution in Iran”, “uprisings in Islamic world such as Intifada - uprising of Palestinians - and rise of Al-Qaeda”, “defeat of Israel by Hesbollah in Lebanon” and “re-evaluation of South-American and African countries of their political and economical situations”, on one hand, and “catastrophes of war in Iraq and the military assault on Gaza Strip” on the other hand. Based on this enlightenment, the people of the world adhere to: (i) Demand for maintaining the holy land - land of prophets - as a sacred region for all three great religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam that have deep historical roots in the region, by reliance on their practical objectives - which are peace and justice for mankind - and not on their subjective theological Ideas - due to interpretations which may be wrong, or unacceptable to the majority of the faithful - for unification of humanity, to promote peace and humanity justice around the world dominated by these three religions, on one hand, and to prevent disastrous events such as crusade wars or dominance by world powers such as Roman Empire, on the other hand; (ii) Remove the “threat to the world peace” and the “strategy of human transfer” in the Middle East, created by the dominant secular Zionist Ideology that exploits Judaism and Christianity under the unfounded theology of Dispensationalism of John Nelson Darby - devised before 1917 in Great Britain and presumed to be a basis for the Balfour declaration in 1917; (iii) Speak in a unified religious basis that the problem of Palestinian and Israelis can not be solved by ignoring the atrocities of Israeli government towards people of Palestine - by killing them purposefully as a result of strategy of transfer, looking at them inhumanely, and using the historic anti-humanity tactics of the king Herod (around 18 BCE) who killed and enslaved even Jews for the abuse of Roman Empire, against them - and instead obligate it to choose the humane tactics of Moses; And on the spectrum of power, require the United States - as a Christian Country - to choose between Roman Empire Ideas and the Jesus’ Ideas of humanity in its foreign policies. The rights of Palestinians in all aspects should be realized as justice suggests, and not as the power imposes. It is time for the people of the world to re-negotiate the establishment of Israel, on the basis of the principles promised to the nations of the world in 1947 and 1948. In this re- negotiation, the major goal must be the creation of a political system in the present state of Israel that guarantees independence of nations, equal rights of all nations, peace and humanity justice between the nations, and ends the suffering of people of Palestine by abusive power of Zionists. For decades, the two-state solution has dominated efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Growing doubts about the viability of the two-state solution raise the question of which, if any, possible alternatives could succeed, if appropriately supported by the international community. RAND researchers conducted 33 focus groups in the region to gather qualitative and quantitative data on the viability of five alternatives: the status quo, the two-state solution, a confederation, annexation, and a one-state solution. The focus groups, conducted in July 2018 and May 2019, collected detailed opinions of more than 270 individuals, including West Bank Palestinians, Gazan Palestinians, Israeli Jews, and Israeli Arabs. These data provide a novel means of investigating whether there are any areas of overlap between Palestinians and Israelis that might form the basis for renewed dialogue. None of the alternatives was acceptable to a majority of both Israelis and Palestinians. The two-state solution was the most politically viable alternative, although all four populations voiced skepticism toward it. The status quo was preferred by Israeli Jews but strongly disliked by Palestinians. West Bank Palestinians' preferred alternative was the two-state solution, while Gazans ranked a one-state solution slightly above the two-state solution. The data highlight the deep distrust and profound animosity of each side for the other. It is hard to imagine a departure from present trends and where they might lead unless and until strong, courageous leadership among Israelis, Palestinians, and the international community articulates a desire for a better future for all.
