Book Description
Excerpt from Manual Training in the High School There is a widespread and' growing demand, in this country for manual training and industrial education. This demand is an effort to meet some of the fundamental educational needs of our school system and the social need for a larger number of intelligent trained workers for the industries. It has resulted in the teaching of a variety of the manual or mechanic arts and in the development of a number of systems of instruction. Almost all of the large cities in every State have spent large sums for buildings and equipment in order to meet the demand. The work in these centers is thoroughly organized, and the excellent results thus far attained have fully justified the large expenditures. In order to extend the benefits of instruction in manual train ing to more schools, legislation to encourage and assist schools undertaking this work, has been enacted in many of the States. Book Description
Excerpt from Manual Training High School Annual: May, 1906 A long, long day is done and darkness falls. The sky is dark; the winds strange memories bring, And in the world cold duty calls and calls. The birds that sang that joyful day forget to sing, Ou such a night we dare not read from books; The songs of bards are discord to our ears, We hear not words that sound like laughing brooks. Tis thus, because our hearts are filled with iears. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Manual Training Magazine, 1908, Vol. 9 Those schools which introduce manual training in more than the first year of high school usually introduce it in all four years. There is the greatest difference between the first and second years, because it is customary to introduce it into the first year to give it a trial, and then to extend it into the other grades of the high school. In general, the history of the introduction and extension Of manual training is as fol lows: In most cases it is begun in the eighth grade and gradually ex tended over the preceding grades; where it is begun in the primary, it is introduced throughout the four grades; in The high school it is intro duced for the first time in the first year, and then gradually extended to the later years. Book Description
Excerpt from Manual Training in the Public Schools of Philadelphia It is well, also, that we should be on our guard against a kind of pseudo manual training that is finding its way into the schools. As is always the case with new move ments, there is a good deal of experimenting with little knacks, which do nothing for either discipline or knowl edge. These are put forward by well-meaning persons as manual training, and great harm is done in this way in misleading the public and wasting the time and energies ofpupfls. Book Description
Excerpt from Manual Training High School Annual: May, 1899 Near the cage door was a cultured Wolf, a college-bred Wolf, With a mixture of southern and eastern accents. He liked spice and sting in themes, but did not approve of printing pieces of the aforesaid qualities in school papers. (that is Why this, Which was originally a highly spiked punch, is now a harmless Eitens lemonade.) He was possessed of a great desire to run the affairs of certain organizations of the Little Peacocks. Sometimes when he met them outside the Place, he would forget to speak to them; Which made the Little Peacocks very sad. There were many other animals in the Place - a Bluebird who hovered 'round the cooking rooms was one, and a Fish, whose native element was the Shops, was another. Some the Little Pea cocks liked, and some they didn't, but for four long years the animals were with them in the Place. Ex-peacock, June, '98. Book Description
Excerpt from Manual Training for Common Schools: An Organized Course in Wood-Working In preparing this book on "Manual Training" the author has attempted to be thorough rather than complete. No attempt has been made to add anything new to the subject-matter, but only to arrange well-known facts so that they will offer as systematic and complete a course of study as is offered in any of the older organized courses. The arrangement of the text as herein presented is the direct result of five years' teaching the subject of wood-working to beginning classes. This class work was preceded by a number of years of shop work as a journeyman machinist and a factory foreman, as well as by a four years' college course in science and engineering. Help in preparing the text has been gleaned from so many fields that it would be impossible to make direct mention of all who have given valuable assistance. The author wishes, however, to acknowledge the aid given by Mr. Charles E. Emmerich, principal of the Indianapolis Manual Training High School, and Mr. Paul W. Covert, head of the manual training department, who have allowed such freedom in the conduct of classes that it has been possible to make all parts of the work measure up to a class-room test. Acknowledgment is due Mr. Otto Stark, head of the art department of the Indianapolis Manual Training High School, for his earnest and careful criticism of the models, drawings, and photographs. This criticism has added much to the value of the text. The final drawings from which the cuts were executed were made by Mr. Edward Stark, of Indianapolis. Book Description
Excerpt from Manual Training for Rural Schools The present trend of education is to train the hand as well as the mind. There is no question but that the study of the three Rs is as necessary and vital today as ever. Close observers, however, have found that other studies can be added that will make school work more interesting and practical without detracting from the essentials. Industrial studies are now firmly established in all progressive high schools and many grade schools, and the movement is spreading to the rural schools as rapidly as conditions permit. Book Description
Excerpt from Manual for the Normal and Industrial Training Courses in Kansas High Schools: 1911-1912 TO quote from the report of the Educational Commission of 1908: It is a well-known fact that the majority of the teachers of Kansas go into the Work with little or no special preparation. A number, small, however, compared with the number Of teachers in the state, attend some of our normal schools or colleges; but practically all the rural schools are in charge of teachers who have made no preparation except such as the academic studies give them. This'is even more Of a detriment than ap pears at first thought, for the graded schools, in which the greater part of the normal and college-trained teachers are employed, are usually super intended by men of experience and special fitness for the work, while the rural teacher has no one to whom she can go for daily advice and help.
