Book Description
Kanpur was a tiny hamlet until the railways arrived in India, and later a British garrison. The bloody events during the 1857 War of Independence led to a clampdown on the city, and under rigorous British supervision, industry began. The wars that Britain was fighting in South Africa, Russia and Afghanistan furthered the development of Kanpur into a hub of supply for the best military boots and other leather goods. Mills were set up and by 1900s, Kanpur became synonymous with high-quality products and top-of-the-class mills. Both Indians and Europeans were responsible for this transformation of a tiny dot on the map of the Indian subcontinent into the world's best supply-centre for leather, cotton, jute and other materials. In this rivetting account of the transformation of a hamlet into what became known as the Manchester of the East, Suraj Prasad Mehra describes the evolution of the city over two hundred years from the 1800s. He introduces us to events and incidents as well as individuals and governments that were responsible for making Kanpur what it eventually became and what it is today.

As America embraced the Industrial Revolution, so did East Hartford, and it became a bustling railroad center. During the 20th century, America's fascination with aviation blossomed here with the construction of the Pratt and Whitney aircraft engine factory and the adjoining Rentschler Field airport. In East Hartford, readers will find many previously unpublished photographs that chronicle the town's history. From the smiling Silver Lane pickle logo to the trains, trolleys, historic buildings, and special events that make up its past, readers will enjoy looking at the changing face of East Hartford.

Book Description
The downhill slide in the global price of crude oil, which started mid-2014, had major repercussions across the Middle East for net oil exporters, as well as importers closely connected to the oil-producing countries from the Gulf. Following the Arab uprisings of 2010 and 2011, the oil price decline represented a second major shock for the region in the early twenty-first century – one that has continued to impose constraints, but also provided opportunities. Offering the first comprehensive analysis of the Middle Eastern political economy in response to the 2014 oil price decline, this book connects oil market dynamics with an understanding of socio-political changes. Inspired by rentierism, the contributors present original studies on Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The studies reveal a large diversity of country-specific policy adjustment strategies: from the migrant workers in the Arab Gulf, who lost out in the post-2014 period but were incapable of repelling burdensome adjustment policies, to Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon, who have never been able to fulfil the expectation that they could benefit from the 2014 oil price decline. With timely contributions on the COVID-19-induced oil price crash in 2020, this collection signifies that rentierism still prevails with regard to both empirical dynamics in the Middle East and academic discussions on its political economy.

Book Description
This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This text aims to fill a gap in the field of Middle Eastern political studies by combining international relations theory with concrete case studies. It begins with an overview of the rules and features of the Middle East regional system—the arena in which the local states, including Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Israel and the Arab states of Syria, Jordan and Iraq, operate. The book goes on to analyse foreign-policy-making in key states, illustrating how systemic determinants constrain this policy-making, and how these constraints are dealt with in distinctive ways depending on the particular domestic features of the individual states. Finally, it goes on to look at the outcomes of state policies by examining several major conflicts including the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Gulf War, and the system of regional alignment. The study assesses the impact of international penetration in the region, including the historic reasons behind the formation of the regional state system. It also analyses the continued role of external great powers, such as the United States and the former Soviet Union, and explains the process by which the region has become incorporated into the global capitalist market.

Book Description
Manchester is one the world's most iconic cities. Not only was it the first industrial city, it can claim to be the first post-industrial city. This book uses historic maps and unpublished and original plans to chart the dramatic growth and transformation of Manchester as it grew rich on its cotton trade from the late 18th century, experienced periods of boom and bust through the Victorian period, and began its post-industrial transformation in the 20th century. The Peterloo Massacre, the Bridgewater Canal, the railway revolution, Trafford Park industrial estate, the Ship Canal, Belle Vue theme park, Wythenshawe garden city, the 1996 IRA bomb, Coronation Street, iconic football stadiums, and MediaCity are just some of the events and places that have put Manchester on the world's perceptual map and are explored through a wealth of published and unpublished maps and plans in this sumptuously illustrated cartographic history.
