Book Description
This title was first published in 2001. Management of coastal zone areas is particularly complicated due to their international nature. Focussing on European coastal zones, this volume examines the various key issues and concerns and highlights the importance of partnership approaches. It details the inter-relationship between the various organizations involved (both governmental and none-governmental), as well as appraising the current national and international legislation and possible future policies. The contributors draw on in-depth case studies from the UK, the Baltic and Hellenic coasts and discuss topics such as international conflicts within the coastal zone, the effectiveness of planning legislation and how to appraise environmental and cultural impacts of changes in coastal zone land use.

Book Description
The 1992 Rio Earth Summit in its Agenda 21 document committed nations to the sustainable development of their coastal areas through the implementation of integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) policies. ICZM promotes an integrated long-term view of coastal zones which takes socio-economic and environmental concerns into account. This report sets out the first integrated spatial assessment of Europe's coasts, undertaken in order to analyse key trends and developments in coastal ecosystems, to examine current policies and financial instruments directed towards coastal management, to monitor progress towards sustainable development objectives and to identify a number of priority areas for action, in light of the review of EU Recommendation 2002/413/EC.

Book Description
Recent assessment of progress in coastal management at the national level shows an impressive growth of efforts after the 1992 Earth Summit, particularly in Europe and the Mediterranean. This book contains regional surveys of coastal management progress in Europe and the Mediterranean since 1992, discussion regional trends, development sin decision making, and cooperative activities. It then goes on to assess national progress towards coastal management, including the development of national coastal management systems, efforts at coordinated planning and management, and the development and use of environmental codes of practice. It then examines selected priority issues in the Northern Adriatic: economic integration and regional economic development, international scientific and technological cooperation in marine affairs and coastal tourism. Finally, the book covers the use of GIS in coastal environments and coastal engineering, the role played by scientific information in coastal policy, and the importance of free trade agreements.

Book Description
Lagoons represent nearly 13% of the shoreline globally and around 5% in Europe. Coastal lagoons are shallow water bodies separated from the ocean by a barrier (e.g., narrow spit), connected at least intermittently to the ocean by one or more restricted inlets, and usually geographically oriented parallel to the shore-line. Coastal lagoons are flexible and usually able to cope with environmental change, yet nowadays they are under threat. This is partly due to climate change impacts (for example, sea-level rise and hydro-meteorological extreme events) but also due to more direct human activities and pressures. The book focuses on addressing these challenges through integrated management strategies seen in a land-sea and science-stakeholder-policy perspective. Pan-European management challenges are seen from the context of the perspectives of Policy, Environment and Modelling. Four case study lagoons in different geographical locations in Europe provide examples of some of the practical experiences and results around these challenges. Possible impacts on drainage basins and lagoons are introduced through integrated scenarios which were developed through a multi-science and land-lagoon science perspective combined with interactions and contributions from stakeholders and citizens. Issues around climate change impacts on environmental conditions in both drainage basins and lagoons are also included. The book derives from a collaborative EC-funded project entitled 'Integrated Water Resources and Coastal Zone Management in European Lagoons in the Context of Climate Change' comprising nine partner institutes with a wide diversity in the scientific disciplines covered. Editors: Ana I. Lillebo, University of Aveiro, Portugal; Per Stalnacke, Bioforsk, Norwegian Institute for Agricultural and Environmental Research, Norway; Geoffrey D. Gooch, University of Dundee, Scotland, UK
