World malaria report 2008 estimated 247 million cases and a million deaths due to malaria globally, in year 2006. Report indicates the endemicity of malaria in 109 countries of the world. National vector borne disease control programme of India reported 55000 cases and 46 deaths due to malaria in Rajasthan in 2007. Malaria is known to be an exclusively local phenomenon, whose transmission, prevalence and distribution are determined by local malariogenic conditions. Identification of the factors associated with disease in local context is a demanding area of research. Detailed analytical epidemiological study to find out the association status of different personal, household and environment related factors including role of Prosopis juliflora, an exotic and invasive plant in India, has carried out in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India. Knowledge on the associated factors of malaria provided in this book may guide the programme planners to target the affected or susceptible groups for better impact and enrich the understanding of malaria among medical research scientists and scholars as a whole.

Entomology in the Doon Valley (Garhwal Region) is a unique journey into annals of the country’s most fascinating and highly entomofauna rich habitat – the Dehra Dun or the Doon Valley, tucked in the cosy climate of the foothills of the lower Himalayan region. At the present time, malaria is responsible for a million deaths a year, with 500 million reported cases of the disease and 2.5 billion people at risk of contracting it. The distribution and severity of the disease vary with the causative agents, vectors and environment. Of the 4 possible parasites, only P. falciparum causes fatal forms; the three others have debilitating effects related to frequent disease recurrence and reviviscence. More than 50 species of anophele are involved in the obligatory transmission of the parasite from man to man. Climate, environment and biogeography condition the distribution of anophele species and modulate the intensity of transmission. This is what is known as the biodiversity of malaria. At the present time, more than 90% of P. falciparum malaria deaths occur in tropical Africa where only 10% of the world's population lives. A child dies of malaria every 30 seconds. This continent is home to the most effective vectors and the climate favours transmission. Severe cases also arise in the forested areas of South East Asia, New Guinea and the Amazon region. Throughout the rest of the tropical and subtropical world, the disease caused by P. vivax and/or P. malariae is less serious.
