Book Description
"….. It is a very difficult task to write a biographical novel. In order to ensure the right balance of facts with creative liberty, the author needs to have the skills of a good biographer, as well as, a novelist. A biographer is a researcher and collector of memories; whereas, a novelist is mainly a dreamer who can spin stories out of nothingness. But, the author of a biographical novel needs to be an amalgamation of both, creativity and fact-finding, both. S/he needs to diligently record all the facts related to the protagonist's life. Even though s/he may take creative liberty while writing the novel, it cannot be forgotten that finally it is a 'biography', which must do justice to the happenings in the protagonist's life. Dates, timelines, family members, enemies, relations, important incidents etc., need to be mentioned properly, without taking them into the ambit of creative liberty. Only after doing so much preparation does a novelist become set to write a good biographical novel. What prompts a biographer to turn a person's life account into a novel, instead of taking the easy route and narrating his/her story in a straight way? It is the excitement of interspersing an author's gift of imagination and ingenuity with the actualities of the protagonist's life. However, it is a tightrope walk to be able to exercise one's creative abilities, while staying true to the researcher within. Only the perfect alchemy of both these factors can result in an excellent biographical novel." – M.W. Dhond An inspirational biographical novel about the life, times, personality, and revolutionary thoughts of the great man, Jyotirao Phule: 'MAHATMA'

Book Description
Thomas Paine wrote the first part of The Rights of Man in 1791 as a response to the furious attack on the French Revolution by the British parliamentarian Edmund Burke in his pamphlet Reflections on the Revolution in France, published the previous year. Paine carefully dissects and counters Burke’s arguments and provides a more accurate description of the events surrounding the revolution of 1789. He then reproduces and comments on the “Declaration of the Rights of Man and of Citizens” promulgated by the National Assembly of France. The manuscript of The Rights of Man was placed with the publisher Joseph Johnson, but that publisher was threatened with legal action by the British Government. Paine then gave the work to another publisher, J. S. Jordan, and on the advice of William Blake, Paine went to France to be out of the way of possible arrest in Britain. The Rights of Man was published in March 1791, and was an immediate success with the British public, selling nearly a million copies. A second part of the book, subtitled “Combining Principle and Practice,” was published in February 1792. It puts forward practical proposals for the establishment of republican government in countries like Britain. The Rights of Man had a major impact, leading to the establishment of a number of reform societies. After the publication of the second part of the book, Paine and his publisher were charged with seditious libel, and Paine was eventually forced to leave Britain and flee to France. Today The Rights of Man is considered a classic of political writing and philosophy. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book Description
The bilingual relationship between the English and the Indian vernaculars has long been crucial to the construction of ideology as well as cultural and political hierarchies. Print was vital for colonial literacy; it was thereby instrumental in initiating a shift in the relation between 'high' and 'low' languages. Here, Dr Naregal examines the relationship between linguistic hierarchies, textual practices and power in colonial western India. Whereas most studies of colonialism focus on India's 'high' literary culture, this book looks at how local intellectuals exploited their 'middling' position through such initiatives as the establishment of newspapers and of influential channels of communication. How was the 'native' intelligentsia able to achieve a position of ideological influence? Dr Naregal shows that, despite their minority position, such people negotiated the arenas of education policy, the press and voluntary associations to advance their social class. In doing this, she sheds light on the process of self-definition among the Indian intelligentsia before anticolonial thinking articulated its hegemonic claims as a nationalistic discourse.
