Fortunately, such qualifications are not so necessary to critics who write on other men's books. The subject is before them, the mind of the author is displayed, without any concealment, in its best forms, and with all it can do. The satirist, therefore, who knows his business, has only to think think differently on some points, to go a little deeper into others, and to mix up the whole with such a seasoning of gentle raillery, as to leave the ignorant in doubt whether he be praising or censuring the work under his examination. In some instances, I have known a satirist of this description excessively severe on an author for not illustrating the leading principles of his work, shewing at great length what he should have said, and yet not advancing one idea which was not derived from the book before him. This, however, requires long professional habits, and some abilities, and therefore is not to be attempted by one who is only beginning to commit depredations on the public. In rude times, when men have greater bluntness, and fewer words, satire is, without a symbol, the direct application of the name to the person, in the very shape in which it happens to be viewed by the mind of him who composes it. If he thinks his antagonist has acted a base and unworthy part, he fits it with a corresponding expression. In our times of greater refinement, we call this vulgar abuse; and while we convey the very same reproach, we do it in language more suitable to a classical education, and to the manners of polite life.
