Book Description
Lung disease affects more than 600 million people worldwide. While some of these lung diseases have an obvious developmental component, there is growing appreciation that processes and pathways critical for normal lung development are also important for postnatal tissue homeostasis and are dysregulated in lung disease. This book provides an authoritative review of fetal and neonatal lung development and is designed to provide a diverse group of scientists, spanning the basic to clinical research spectrum, with the latest developments on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of normal lung development and injury-repair processes, and how they are dysregulated in disease. The book covers genetics, omics, and systems biology as well as new imaging techniques that are transforming studies of lung development. The reader will learn where the field of lung development has been, where it is presently, and where it is going in order to improve outcomes for patients with common and rare lung diseases.

Book Description
This book represents a comprehensive update on pulmonary surfactant by merging classical knowledge with new information. Topics include surfactant secretion and alveolar processing and recycling; physical bases and different theoretical models of the physiological mechanism for pulmonary surfactant action; recent findings on surfactant-like material in other organs; developmental processes and multifactorial regulation; etiology and physiopathology of neonatal respiratory distress; and modern methods for functional explorations of the lung in neonates and experimental models in animals. The book also contains a discussion on the management of hyaline membrane disease, from both the experimental and clinical points of view.

Book Description
There has been a spectacular development in both basic research on the pulmonary surfactant system and the clinical use of surfactant for treatment of lung diseases, especially in the neonatal period. In particular, the molecular biology and physiological roles of the surfactant-associated proteins (SP-A) have been clarified during the last few years; the structure and functions of these proteins therefore constitute an important hot topic, and are reviewed in several chapters of this volume. including surface chemistry and ultrastructure of surfactant components, the role of surfactant in lung mechanics and alveolar liquid homeostasis, and surfactant metabolism and its hormonal control. However, as mentioned above, clinical applications of surfactant research have become increasingly important and are therefore dealt with extensively in the remaining chapters. during the last few years to illustrate the fascinating complexity of the surfactant system. Hence, the main mission of this volume is to catalyze the future development in this field with the exchange of ideas between scientific workers from different disciplines.

Book Description
This book deals with the methods and scientific basis of inhalation toxicology. It describes devices and facilities needed to expose animals to inhaled particles and gases as well as approaches to estimating or measuring the fraction of the inhaled material that is retained in the respiratory tract. The book then reviews the evergrowing repertoire of techniques that can be used to measure the responses elicited by the exposure. Quantitative and qualitative anatomical, physiological, and biochemical strategies are discussed in detail. We believe that the toxicology of inhaled materials is an important and timely topic for several'reasons. During the past decade, morbidity and mortality attributable to cardiovascular disease have significantly decreased. Progress in combatting cancer, the second most important cause of death, has been slower, and lung cancer actually became the leading cause of death in men and the second leading cause of cancer death in women. In addition, the incidence of non-neo plastic respiratory diseases such as emphysema, fibrosis, and chronic bronchitis has increased the past decade. In the United States, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has recently reported that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease affects nearly 10 miliion persons and accounts for 59,000 deaths yearly; indeed, it ranks as the fifth leading cause of death. Because the incidence is increasing, the NIH estimates that it may become the nation's fourth or even third leading cause of death by the year 2000.
