Excerpt from Sugar Pine and Western Yellow Pine in California Since the early mi mng days in California, sugar pine has been one of the most valuable timber trees of the State, and the exhaustion of the eastern white pine forests has of late brought it into even greater prominence. Unfortunately, it has a somewhat restricted range, and the supply in sight, though large, is by no means unlimited. Yellow pine in California, which is of equal importance as a timber tree, is also included in this study. The two species are so intimately associated, both in the forest and in the market, that a study of one would be incomplete without a study of the other. It is believed that the time is ripe for the better management of the forests of the State, since the growth of lumbering on a large scale, the increased value of timberlands, and, above all, the awakening interest of the lumbermen themselves, seem to indicate the possibility of a first step, at least, in this direction. Excerpt from Lumber Recovery From Ponderosa Pine in Northern California Lumber recovery information from 942 logs from old and young-growth pon derosa pine (pinus ponderosa Dougl. Ex Laws.) trees in northern California is presented. More than 58 percent of the lumber volume was found in Shop, Moulding, and Select grades. About 25 percent of the total lumber volume was Moulding, and 24 percent was Standard and Better Dimension. Lumber volume recovery is presented on the basis of cubic feet and board feet. Volume recovery varied by scaling diameter but not by log grade. Value recovery and percent vol ume by lumber grade did vary by log grade and diameter, but no difference was found between the grade 1 and the grade 2 logs. They may bear hairs, or stalked. Glands, similar in form to those found on the leaves. In certain species they are also covered With a whitish powdery sub stance, lmovm as the bloom. The trees in this belt are of use to us as fuel, but do not make good lumber because they are crooked and often rotten at the heart. As you continue to climb above the foothill zone, at an eleva tion of from 2500 to 7000 feet, you will find our good forests of pine and fir timber. The commercial timber trees of California - that is to say, the trees that are manufactured into lumber, belong to the conifer family, so called because they produce their fruit, or seeds, in a bone that is covered with tough, woody scales to protect the seeds.
