Book Description
Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 3: July-August 1951 Two modern residences, one for the park superintendent and the other for the shop foreman, have been constructed near the shop as the nucleus of a well organized service area. Behind the scenes and seldom thought of are the various utilities which had to be provided to make the park run. Buried in the ground are the water lines, gas lines and the sewage disposal system. Overhead is the electric distribution system. Sur rounding the park is a hog proof wire fence. Leading into the park is a graded gravel road. All of these were accomplished in two short years with the' sum of approximately much ingenuity and hard work, and the generosity and complete coopera tion of the Webster and Bossier Parish Police Juries. Book Description
Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 3: October, 1950 As the deer came leaping out of the truck and raced ofi' across the brush and high grass of Pine Island, their white tails flagging, I noticed a quite elderly man, standing perfectly motionless, tears glisten ing in his eyes, intently watching each deer as it dashed into the sheltering forest at the other side of the clearing. As the last of the 48 deer liberated there that day disappeared into the timber the gentleman turned to me and said. Book Description
Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 3: November 1950 Rabbits and the multiplication table have long been popularly associated in our thought, yet as we shall presently see, prolific as rabbits are, they require the protection of closed seasons, regulations against market hunting, and night shining with headlights, and where prae tical, the provision of necessary cover and other environmental improvements if an adequate supply is to be maintained for our numerous, enthusiastic rabbit hunters. This, it is found, is true in spite of the fact that when rabbits were introduced to the one continent where they were not present, naturally, the great island of Australia, they became a prodigious pest and a truly continental calamity. That will be clarified later in this discussion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 3: March, 1951 The purpose of this article is to indicate that Lampreys of the Chestnut species, the not dangerous kind, are appearing in unusual numbers at present in Louisiana waters. It is the belief of the writer that in the case of Lake Catahoula, this is due to the unusually low water conditions that occurred during the winter of 1950-51, whereby the Lampreys were concentrated together with concentrated populations of game and commercial fish. These Chestnut Lampreys have never been known to cause extreme damage anywhere, even though they do destroy some fish. Recently, a sports fisherman caught one Largemouth Black Bass (green Trout) to which were attached no less than seven Chestnut Lampreys. The paramount purpose of this article is to alert all sports and commercial fishermen to the danger involved as a re sult of the introduction of the Sea Lam prey i_nto Louisiana waters. The aecom panying illustration distinctly shows the distinguishing differences. Specimens of Lampreys taken should be sent in to the Department of Wild Life and Fisheries where they will be identified should the devastating Sea Lamprey ever enter the waters of our State.
