The authors transcribed data from microfilm available from the Library of Virginia for marriages reported between 1881 and 1900, then compared this information to the actual license and return (whenever possible) and to the marriage books available in the Clerk's Office, Loudoun County Court House, Leesburg, Virginia. The authors found much information which was not included on the microfilm and have added it to the transcription. Arranged alphabetically by the groom's surname, a typical entry includes groom's name, bride's name, date of marriage, place of marriage, race, previous marital status, place of birth, residence, occupation, date of license, consent, marriage official and date of return. An index to brides' names completes this work.

Old Rappahannock County, originally embracing lands lying on both sides of the Rappahannock River, was organized in 1656 and was formerly a part of Lancaster County. In 1692 Old Rappahannock was abolished. The portion lying south of the river was taken to form Essex County, and the area north of the river formed the county of Richmond. Records of Old Rappahannock and Essex counties, on which this work is founded, date from 1655 and are on file at the courthouse in Tappahannock, Essex County. Some marriage bonds of the period 1804 to 1853 were previously copied into the marriage register, instituted as the official catalogue of marriages. In compiling this work, Mrs. Wilkerson used not only the marriage bonds found in the register and the marriage register itself, but also inferential marriage proofs derived from wills, deeds, and court order books. The result is a work of astonishing magnitude; the period covered runs to nearly 250 years and the number of persons namedĪ including brides, grooms, parents, and guardiansĪ touches 10,000. The text is arranged alphabetically throughout and includes the date of the marriage record and the source.

This compilation was originally undertaken at the request of the Board of Supervisors of Brunswick County, who suggested that Miss Fothergill copy and index the Brunswick County marriage bonds from 1752, when they first appear among miscellaneous papers, until the commencement of vital records in 1852. When once she set to the task, Miss Fothergill discovered that she could improve the basic list of marriages by adding inferential marriage proofs from estate settlements, wills, and deeds. The resulting compilation, running from 1730 to 1852, is a composite of more than 3,000 marriage records. As is customary in such compilations, men are listed in alphabetical order, with an index of brides comprising a separate section. Incidental information found among the records, and employed here, includes references to places of residence and to guardians, sureties, and parents. All told the work indentifies 7,500 brides, grooms, parents and sureties, and the exact date of the marriage or bond. With an improved index.
