Book Description
This volume is the publication and analysis of the tomb of pharaoh Seneb-Kay (ca. 1650-1600 BCE), and a cemetery of associated tombs at Abydos, all attributable to a group of kings of Egypt's Second Intermediate Period. The tomb of Seneb-Kay has provided the first known king's tomb of pharaonic Egypt that included decorated imagery in the burial chamber. That evidence, presented in full-color and discussed in detail in the volume, allows us to identify this previously unknown ruler along with a group of seven similar tombs that can be attributed to an Upper Egyptian Dynasty that survived for approximately half a century during a period of pronounced territorial fragmentation in the Nile Valley. The book examines the architecture and artifacts associated with these tombs as well as presents an osteological analysis of the bodies of Seneb-Kay and the other anonymous individuals buried at South Abydos. Seneb-Kay's skeletonized mummy was recovered inside his tomb and provides a rare opportunity to examine the body of a king of this era. He is the earliest substantially preserved body of an Egyptian king to survive in the archaeological record, and the first known Egyptian pharaoh whose skeletal remains show that he died in battle. The analysis of his death in a military encounter, along with insights from the other skeletal remains indicates a line of kings whose rise to power was associated with their social background as members of the military elite. The book examines the wider implications of these bodies in terms of the pronounced militarization of society in the Second Intermediate Period. Seneb-Kay's tomb has also provided extensive evidence, through its use of reused blocks bearing decoration, of earlier elite and royal monuments at Abydos. The combination of evidence provides a new archaeological and historical window into the political situation that defined Egypt's Second Intermediate Period.

Book Description
"During the Depression years, J. Arthur Rath spent his early childhood shuttled between relatives and foster parents in Hawai'i and on the mainland while his single mother, Hualani, struggled to make a living. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, his grandparents sent him to the Big Island and Konawaena School, where he heard the Kamehameha Schools boy choir at a school assembly. The performance made a deep impression on Rath, and a year later, in 1944, he entered Kamehameha as an eighth-grade boarder. Thus began Rath's love affair with an institution that he credits with turning his life around, with giving him and other disadvantaged children of native ancestry - Hawai'i's "lost generations" - the confidence and support necessary to make something of themselves. This is the story of that love affair. It is also the story of Rath's recent battle, together with other alumni, for the integrity of his beloved Kamehameha against the school's trustees and their organization, the powerful Bishop Estate." "Intelligent and impressionable, Rath spent an idyllic four years at Kamehameha. In a lively talk-story manner, he reminisces about campus life and his classmates, many of whom became lifelong friends and influential members of the Hawaiian community: Don Ho, Nona Beamer, Oswald Stender, Tom Hugo, William Fernandez. Years later Rath, a successful retired businessman, would call on these same friends to hold Kamehameha's trustees accountable for their mismanagement of Bishop Estate's vast financial holdings and ultimately their failure to carry out founder Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop's mandate to educate Hawaiian children. Rath draws on his many personal ties to the school and the estate to provide surprising revelations on the trustees and the "Bishop Estate Scandal," which made headlines daily throughout the mid-1990s."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Description
A grisly racial murder in what news commentators insist on calling “the heartland.” A feeding frenzy of mass media and seamy politics. An illicit love affair with the potential to wreck lives. In his grandly inventive last novel, John Gregory Dunne orchestrated these elements into a symphony of American violence, chicanery, and sadness. In the aftermath of Edgar Parlance’s killing, the small prairie town of Regent becomes a destination for everyone from a sociopathic teenaged supermodel to an enigmatic attorney with secret familial links to the worlds of Hollywood and organized crime. Out of their manifold convergences, their jockeying for power, publicity or love, Nothing Lost creates a drama of magnificent scope and acidity.

Book Description
Mark and Elizabeth Prophet show that many of Jesus' original teachings were lost. Some were removed from the Gospels. Others were suppressed or kept secret. In modern vernacular, the authors offer a unique blend of the mystical and the practical that goes beyond the orthodox view of Jesus to discover his original message. They answer questions that have puzzled readers of the Bible for centuries.

Book Description
The Periodic Table of Elements hasn't always looked like it does now, a well-organized chart arranged by atomic number. In the mid-nineteenth century, chemists were of the belief that the elements should be sorted by atomic weight. However, the weights of many elements were calculated incorrectly, and over time it became clear that not only did the elements need rearranging, but that the periodic table contained many gaps and omissions: there were elements yet to be discovered, and the allure of finding one had scientists rushing to fill in the blanks. Supposed "discoveries" flooded laboratories, and the debate over what did and did not belong on the periodic table reached a fever pitch. With the discovery of radioactivity, the discourse only intensified. Throughout its formation, the Periodic Table of Elements has seen false entries, good-faith errors, retractions, and dead ends. In fact, there have been more falsely proclaimed elemental discoveries throughout history than there are elements on the table as we know it today. The Lost Elements: The Periodic Table's Shadow Side collects the most notable of these instances, stretching from the nineteenth century to the present. The book tells the story of how scientists have come to understand elements, by discussing the failed theories and false discoveries that shaped the path of scientific progress. We learn of early chemists' stubborn refusal to disregard alchemy as a legitimate practice, and of one German's supposed discovery of an elemental metal that breathed. As elements began to be created artificially in the twentieth century, we watch the discovery climate shift to favor the physicists, rather than the chemists. Along the way, Fontani, Costa, and Orna introduce us to the key figures in the development of today's periodic table, including Lavoisier and Mendeleev. Featuring a preface from Nobel Laureate Roald Hoffmann, The Lost Elements is an expansive history of the wrong side of chemical discovery-and reveals how these errors and gaffes have helped shape the table as much as any other form of scientific progress.

Book Description
Lost in an unfamiliar life and possessed by a raging spirit, Pam's best hope is helping a hodgepodge trio of musicians, and a flighty husband she can't quite recall, form a rock band. But when her hidden hellcat breaks free, everything might fall to pieces... Pam Davis is completely confused. After waking up in the hospital with her memory wiped clean, she returns home to her supposed husband, an aspiring rock musician who decides she's possessed. And, yes, she may be slightly possessed, but the angry spirit in her head terrifies her less than the idea of ending up alone and friendless in the unfamiliar world of London circa 1969. Determined to survive her strange circumstances, Pam immerses herself in managing her spouse's band, despite her hazy understanding of rock music and the roving eye of her less-than-ideal husband. Soon the mysterious voice in her head graduates from whispering thoughts of rage to controlling her very being. Fighting to hold her own against the violent urges spilling from her fractured psyche, Pam struggles to convince the sexist rock ‛n' rollers that a woman can make their headlining dreams come true. But when a predatory club owner tries to take advantage of her in a seedy bar, her furious inner voice unleashes its brutal ferocity. Will Pam's split personality launch her to the stars or knock her into the abyss? Harmony Lost is a quirky and captivating contemporary fantasy/science fiction novel, blending time-travel, amnesia, fish-out-of-water scenarios, body swapping, and the enthralling allure of the Nineteen Seventies. If you crave chaos-infused characters, tantalizing mysteries, and a groovy vibe, then join Stella Jorette on this mind-bending adventure. Buy Harmony Lost to riff on past performances today! Dear Reader, Harmony Lost is the first novel in a series but can be enjoyed as a standalone story. This book is relatively tame by today's standards but expect behavior and language that reflect the uninhibited and vaguely unsanitary early 1970s music scene. This edition has been electronically and professionally edited. But the novel is written in both UK and US English. Feel free to bring any usage errors to the author's attention.
