"Wow!" I thought to myself as I rode home from Eighth Grade graduation with my Mom and my brother Tommy, in Mom's mini-van. "I thought for sure there was going to be a fist fight or a riot when Gordon showed up at graduation. Especially since he had been told not to come to the graduation. I wish he could have experienced the graduation himself. It's too bad Mr. Muscleman had to take him out of the gymnasium as soon as he got there. I guess that's why he wasn't invited. Maybe if he had......" "Hey you two!" my Mom interrupted my thoughts. "How about a pizookie over at TJ's Diner? I think we could all use a treat right now. Besides we need to celebrate Nancy Jane's accomplishment too." "Yeah," Tommy said as he turned his head from the front seat of the mini-van to peer back where I was sitting, "we need to celebrate that Nancy Jane will never ever have to go back to Middle School. I don't think this family can handle any more drama from that group of drama kings and drama queens that were in your class at Middle School." "You're real funny Tommy!" I said sarcastically. "But you're not very smart. All of those so called drama kings and drama queens will be going right along with me to High School next year. So who knows what will happen next year." "Oh yeah!" Tommy replied. "Things will probably get worse. We'd better hire a body guard, or get a security system for the house.... or MOVE! That's it we should move to some place where nobody knows you!" "TOMMY!" I yelled from the back seat as I threw the sweatshirt jacket that had been beside me on the seat forward towards my brother. "KIDS!" my Mom almost screamed. "ENOUGH! Just quit it! We've all been through a lot this past year with the name calling and the bullying and the threatening phone calls. We all need to just take a big deep breath and then get on with our summer. High School will be a whole new experience for everyone. So both of you take a chill pill and relax. Now I'm looking forward to my delicious pizookie from TJ's." "You're right Mom," I responded, "what will be, will be." ******** While my Mom, Tommy, and I enjoyed the warm pizookies at TJ's Diner we began to make plans for the summer that lay ahead of us. Jack, my Mom's boyfriend, had been in Los Angeles on a business trip that he could not get out of. Otherwise he would have been at my Eighth Grade graduation because he loved me like his own daughter. Unfortunately some foreign investors could only meet with Jack and his boss today in Los Angeles, but the good news in all of this was that Jack arrived at TJ's Diner about the time our pizookies were brought to us. I wondered why my Mom ordered the large one. I guess she knew she would be having a guest to share it with her. As we talked about our summer the drama and excitement that had happened during my Middle School Years seemed to be moving more and more to the past. What was getting my attention now was the talk about a nice long road trip to Utah. I had never been to Utah before. I'd been to Los Angeles a few times but never anywhere else... but Utah? Weren't there a lot of Mormons there? "I have to be in Salt Lake City the last weekend of July," Jack continued to go over...

This is Book No. 1 entitled "The Summer Before" in the 6 part series "My Years In Middle School". Follow the adventures of Nancy Jane and her two best friends Helen Schunter and Karen Stamm as they experience school, boys, bullying, getting even, dealing with Nancy Janes' nemesis Lois Talker and more. Other titles in this series include: * Book #2 - "Is This Love?" * Book #3 - "Scanner In My Neighborhood" * Book #4 - "Summertime Memories" * Book #5 - "Girl's Revenge" * Book #6 - "Lookout High School, Here We Come!" Following is an excerpt from Book #1 "The Summer Before". "AAAAGGGGHHHH!" I could hear my mother screaming from the direction of the living room as I lay in my bed half asleep. "Who would do such a thing!" she continued to scream. I went from my half asleep stupor to wide awake almost instantly. I sprang out of my bed and ran into the hallway heading towards the living room and the direction of all of the noise and commotion. When I arrived in the living room there was my mother standing in the open front door to our modest house, with her hands on her hips as she looked intensely out the wide open doorway towards the street in front our house. I was taken back for a moment because from my vantage point where I was at to the back and left of Mom, her silhouette made her look like some crazy women out of one of those action adventure horror movies. I proceeded cautiously and moved in alongside my Mother so that I could see out the front door to see what all the excitement was myself. Mom's screaming had quieted to her more normal low rumbling tone as she continued, "I just can't believe it! Who would do such a terrible thing." About that time I got a good look myself. "WHOA!" I roared and then burst out into spontaneous laughter. There it was. The object of all of the early morning excitement was right there in front of my eyes. And what a sight it was. Mom's mini-van had been egged right there in front of our house. The poor thing looked like it was a bull's eye at a shooting range. I just could not keep myself from laughing. And laughing was the wrong fuel for Mom's fire at that time. "What are you laughing about? It's not funny!" Mom's rumblings began to elevate into a little bit louder roar. "If you think it's so funny.... I'll show you what's funny... you get your butt dressed and out there and you get that egg off of my car! Yes I'll show you what's funny!" Mom shouted out as she turned and walked towards the kitchen. "Now where is my phone?" Mom muttered as she entered the kitchen, "Where is that thing when I need it? I'm going to call the cops and report this! I won't stand for this, I won't stand for this type of crap at all. I'm going to call the cops and we're going to catch them. Oh there it is." As I made my way back to my room to get some clothes on before I went out to clean up the mess I could hear Mom on the phone talking to the police. I was not looking forward to cleaning all of that gooey sticky egg yuck off of Mom's mini-van. I thought to myself, "Why did I have to do it? Why couldn't my older brother Tommy do it? But then Tommy was never home much anymore anyway." Tommy got a "new" car last Spring when he had graduated from high school. By "new" I mean new to him. It was four or five years old but it was the car of his dreams so it was "new" to him. Since he was headed off to college at the end of the week he had not been around the house much the past few days. He was out joy riding with his old high school buddies saying "I won't see them for a long time after I go to college so I gotta spend time with them now." Such a life, I couldn't wait until I had my own car.... "QUICK! GET OUT HERE!" Mom was screaming again. "GET OUT HERE RIGHT NOW! WE'VE GOT TO GET GOING!" I could tell from the tone in Mom's voice..

Following is an excerpt from Book #3 "Scanner In My Neighborhood". "BBBRRIINNNGG! BBBRRIINNNNGGG!" the old fashioned ring tone of Elizabeth Haney's cell phone barked out into the quiet atmosphere at the Centerville County Offices where she was employed. "BBBRRIINNNGG! BBBRRIINNNNGGG!" "Hello?" Elizabeth said into her phone, "Who is this? May I help you?" From the other end of the phone came a quiet but familiar voice. "Mom can you come and get me, I'm at school?" I said, "I don't feel very good. Ms. Buxton sent me to Principal Baskin's office after I threw up all over my desk. Can you come and get me?" "Oh Nancy Jane!" replied Elizabeth Haney, my mother, "Let me tell my supervisor Mrs. Pacheco that I need to leave for a while and then I'll be right over. OK? Can you lie down or something until I get there?" I replied, quietly again but with hopefulness in my voice, "I'll be OK Mom here in Mr. Baskin's Office. I'm just going to sit here and wait for you. Hurry Mom! I don't feel very good." "I'll see you soon Nancy Jane," my Mom replied, "Sit tight and I'll be there before you know it." My Mom was so fortunate to have Mrs. Pacheco as her work Supervisor. Mrs. Pacheco had three children of her own and knew that when a child is sick they needed their mother. My Mom assured Mrs. Pacheco that she would only be gone an hour or so and left her work space. She walked briskly down the hallway, out the double glass doors at the front of the Centerville County Office Building, and made it to her trusted old green mini-van. The "green toad", as we affectionately called it, burped to life and off they went to rescue me from the Principal's Office. "Oh Nancy Jane!" said my Mom as she burst through the old oak doorway to Principal Baskin's Office. Mom came right up to me and helped me to my feet. "Do I need to sign anything?" my Mom said turning her head towards the desk where Principal Baskin was sitting. "No Ms. Haney," replied Principal Baskin, "Just get this girl home and on the mend. I'm hoping that whatever she has is only a twenty four hour thing. I expect I'll see her in school tomorrow if I'm right." "Oh thank you," replied my Mom. "I hope Nancy Jane does see you tomorrow. I can't afford to miss many more days of work this year. Besides, for her sake I hope she is feeling well enough to be in school." ******** Before my Mom and I left the parking lot in front of the Middle School we had a talk about my getting sick earlier. My Mom was concerned that I might be sicker than either Principal Baskin or I thought. I had said, "This will be great to be home from school the rest of the day. I can catch up on my water color painting, play with Razor and Cutie our cats, and maybe go play with Helen and Karen when they get out of school later." All the time my Mom was looking at me with a scowl on her face. Her eyes were squeezed slightly closed and a big wrinkle crossed her forehead. "And then before dinner we can all go....." "Whoa! Stop Nancy Jane," Mom interrupted me mid-sentence. "You are not doing any painting, playing, or going anywhere except to bed when I get you home. Your face looks as white as the pearl white paint on our neighbor's new BMW. If you really feel up to it you can..

Other titles in this series include: * Book #1 - The Summer Before * Book #2 - Is This Love? * Book #3 - Scanner In My Neighborhood * Book #4 - Summertime Memories * Book #6 - Lookout High School, Here We Come! Following is an excerpt from Book #5 "Girl's Revenge". "NANCY JANE! TIME TO GET UP! TODAY'S THE FIRST DAY OF YOUR EIGHTH GRADE!" came my Mom's loud, sharp voice (for 6:45am) down the long hallway of our house. As the cob webs were slowly clearing from my head, my thoughts turned to, "Hummmmm, first day of Eighth Grade? Hummmmm, where did my summer go? It seemed like only last week I was cruising around Lake Chester with Helen and Karen.... OH YEAH, that was last week and I remember... Helen almost KILLED ALL OF US when she drove our rental boat onto the road in front of the Talker's!" "NANCY JANE! I'M MAKING YOUR FAVORITE! COME ON, GET UP!" my Mom yelled once more from the kitchen. Sweet smells had been drifting down our long hallway and into my bedroom for the last few minutes. I knew before my Mom made the announcement a moment ago that she was busily preparing banana pancakes and scrambled eggs for me. My Mom is the best! I could even smell the fresh strawberries and whip cream that was waiting on the table to go on top of my banana pancakes. I'm not sure how I could smell the whip cream.... I sure thought I could though! As I slipped out of my bed and my feet hit the floor my mind flashed back to my two previous years at the Hicston Middle School. I remembered how two years ago, almost to the exact day, I was so concerned about what I would wear to my first day in the Sixth Grade. I had spent an extra twenty minutes picking out exactly the right outfit... only to be sent back to my room to change into the standard white top, dark skirt school uniform. And then my thoughts wandered to the boys from my class. I don't know why my class only had four boys in it. The classes ahead of mine and behind mine had lots of boys. Their ratio of girls to boys was like three girls to every two boys. They had it made! Why did we only have Asslin, Brandon, Tony, and Gordon in our class? I remember when Asslin was my boyfriend and then when Gordon Onawello transferred to our school Gordon kind of became my new boyfriend. Asslin didn't like that very much... not very much at all, actually Asslin hardly said two words to me my entire Seventh Grade school year. I wonder if this year will be different? "NANCY JANE! WHERE ARE YOU!" my Mom's voice now with a hint of anguish in it came rumbling down the long hallway once again. Fortunately I had already slipped into my school uniform that I had laid out on the chair in the corner of my bedroom the night before. "I'M RIGHT HERE MOM!" I shouted as I burst through my bedroom doorway, jetted into the hallway, and raced towards the kitchen. "I'm right here Mom!" ******** As was our tradition my Mom drove me to my first day of the new school year. I was getting older you know. After all I was thirteen years old now. As we neared the school I said to my Mom, "Mom you can stop your mini-van over there." I was pointing to a vacant spot along the street curb suitable for her Mom's mini-van, the trusted people hauler, the reliable toilet paper adventure (teepee!) get-away vehicle; the green toad... the spot was suitable for my Mom to park in. "WHAT!" my Mom said in surprise. "Why don't I just take you right up to the front of the school?" "No Mom!" I replied. "I don't want anybody to see me...

Book Description
Martin Vopěnka’s novel, The Back of Beyond—Travels with Benjamin, is the story of a middle-aged man, who—despite his professional success and affluence—lacks fulfillment. After the tragic death of his wife, he is left alone with his eight-year-old son and quickly realizes that if he wants to succeed in the role of single parent that has suddenly been thrust upon him, he has to change fundamentally. So, he takes his son and sets out on a journey to what he dubs the Back of Beyond. Without telling anyone of their plans—in fact, without any plans to speak of—father and son travel from city to city, from country to country, assembling a travelogue that includes not only depictions of exotic places and colorful encounters, but also an inner journey, deep into the human experience and the complexities of living in a post-communist world. With its unique blend of sensitive and suggestive language, The Back of Beyond - Travels with Benjamin is a stylistic gem, rendered in seamless translation and appearing here for the first time in English.

Book Description
This novel is full of Love, Mystery, Deception and heartache. It will make you laugh, and sometimes cry. The heroin in this story is Shelleen Porter. She didn't wait until she was an adult to become her brother's keeper. She started when she was just nine years old. This young girl was destined to be a leader. Little Jake was her neighbor, and because he had polio, and walked different from most twelve year olds, and talked different, some children had the tendency to pick at him in some way. But not when Shelleen was around. One evening she had detention, which meant she had to stay after school for an hour. When she got home her sister told her that Morey had pushed Little Jake down. She went to Jake's house, got him and proceeded to Morey's house. When his Mom answered the door. Shelleen told her she needed to see Morey. His mother asked her the reason. She told her she came to beat his butte for pushing Jake down. Morey's mother, shocked and surprised, said that if he needed punishing she was the one to do it. Shelleen said well go ahead and punish him, because if she didn't she was going to get him going to school tomorrow morning, or at school, or coming home from school tomorrow afternoon. Because Shelleen believed she should look after her neighbors and her friends, she had the reputation of being a troublemaker. Her mother had to constantly visit her school. This went on all through elementary school and into high school. One of her most troubling times in high school was when she got a baseball bat to beat seven guys who had raped five girls in her classroom. In the eleventh grade, Shelleen and her sister Greta coned there way into an adult nightclub. There she met Lou Buckbinder. They fell in love. Hence, began a long love story. She was seventeen, he was twenty-six years old. This would end up being one of the most controversial love stories you have ever read. Lou was a married man, whose wife took their daughter and left home. He was looking for someone to hang with; Shelleen was looking for her first love. While she had a lot of self-control issues, he had friends he was concerned about that had many problems. Johnny his best friend was married to a woman that had turned out to be a drunken alcoholic. David had an ex-girlfriend that was pretending to be pregnant in order to get money from him. His sister-in-law, Shandon was one of the five girls who were raped by seven guys. She was being investigated, because two of those guys had been mysteriously killed. She was a suspect in their murders. Lou was a college graduate who wanted to build a real estate business. That was his goal. Now, he had a girl friend that was constantly having problems that was affecting him and his work. In Shelleen's second year of college she was enticed into having a sex act with another girl. Afterwards, she felt dirty and ashamed, and then she attempted suicide. Lou coached her into letting it go. After this incident, she began to change. Her whole attitude and outlook on life changed. She started making good grades, and kept an A average throughout the rest of her college experience. When she graduated, she and Lou were supposed to get married, but a strange thing happen. She told Lou that they were going to have to put their marriage on hold for a while. She said she had joined the Army Nurses Corps, and had accepted an assignment in Iraq. When Shelleen was sixteen years old, she said that the most important thing in life to her was, what she could do to make life better for all people. That seemed to be the creed she was living by. Lou was devastated. He felt like the whole world was against him. He finally picked himself up, and started planning for his future without the person he loved more than life itself. Shelleen had been in Iraq a little more than a year when he decided to go there to see her. She told him he shouldn'
