Author: Nicolas Fieve
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1136624821
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 438
Book Description
Japan's ability to develop its own brand of modernity has often been attributed in part to the sophistication of its cities. Concentrating on Kyoto, Edo and Tokyo, the contributors to this volume weave together the links between past and future, memory and vision, symbol and structure, between marginality and power, and between Japan's two great capital cities.

Tokyo
Author: Jeremy Seymour Eades
Publisher: ABC-CLIO
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 344
Book Description
The Tokyo region of Japan is, in terms of population, the largest urban area on earth. Its centre comprises the 23 wards of Tokyo itself but the urban sprawl has long since extended to include the other major cities of Kawasaki and Yokohama. From the early 16th century, when the Tokugawa rulers of Japan established their administrative headquarters there, Edo, as it was known, developed quickly into one of the largest cities in the world. It was renamed Tokyo, or 'Eastern Capital', when the Emperor moved there in 1868. In the 20th century most of Tokyo was destroyed first by the Kanto earthquake of 1923 and then by the American bombing of 1945. Nonetheless, it was rapidly rebuilt, and is now, along with London and New York, one of the major control centres of the global economy. Yet behind the ultramodern facade of the main commercial areas, Tokyo remains largely a city of narrow streets and small, intimate neighbourhoods. However, the threat of serious earthquakes remains and the relocation of the capital is being increasingly discussed. This is the first annotated, critical survey of the English-language literature on Tokyo and its region.

Cities in a Global Society
Author: Richard V. Knight
Publisher: SAGE Publications, Incorporated
ISBN:
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 352
Book Description
As the year 2000 approaches, urbanized areas are entering a new era -- one which will be shaped primarily by their response to powerful global forces -- environmental and economic. The contributors suggest that cities should begin to assess their role in a global society and establish their strategic position and comparative advantage in the global marketplace. They argue that what cities need are policies and programmes which enable them to be more responsive to opportunities which are being created as national barriers and market regulations are removed.
