John Goodman provides details of the named locomotives owned by the L&NWR and its constituent companies, including the Grand Junction and the Liverpool & Manchester railways, the Bolton & Leigh and North Union railways, and of the Lancaster & Carlisle and several companies which were absorbed into it. It covers all the names dating from the times of King William IV to the withdrawal of Sirocco, the last L&NWR name to survive in June 1949, and analyses the naming policy through the succession of Chief Mechanical Engineers. The Company policy of re-using engine names over and over again is fully documented and a glossary of every name is included. The last section was written as the result of the considerable correspondence following the 1994 publication of LMS Locomotive Names necessitating corrections and providing much entirely new information. L M S & L N E R Steam Locomotives, is the result of over two decades of photographing steam locomotives in action in many parts of Britain covered by the former LMS and LNER Railway Companies. They were the two largest of the ‘Big Four’ Railway Companies which operated in Britain between 1923 and 1948. The majority of the photographs were taken during the British Railways era between 1948 and 1968. Although the author Malcolm Clegg has a sizeable collection of steam locomotive photographs taken during this period, the photographs which appear in this book are from the private collection of his lifelong friend and family relative, Mr Peter Cookson (a retired school-master), himself a railway historian, author and amateur photographer, who has kindly provided the photographs for publication in this book. Many of the photographs selected are rare and unusual for a variety of reasons which should appeal to railway historians and steam enthusiasts alike.
