Book Description
Understanding resistance movements and armed militias in the Middle East is key in unravelling this complex and sensitive region. This book focuses on the Hezbollah group in Lebanon, combining extensive ethnography with critical insights drawn from a range of disciplines including sociology, psychology and philosophy. Instead of approaching resistance or violence through received macro-formulations, the book concentrates on micro-narratives and spatial dynamics of two critical spaces – namely, Dahiya, a Shia-majority suburb of Beirut and Hezbollah’s stronghold, and training camps, where volunteers metamorphose into militants. The book is unique in that it juxtaposes ethnographic narratives in such a way that they script their own rich tale of bodily tactics, ‘resistance’ and possible subjectivity in the realm of everyday life. They create a complex palimpsest of the history of Lebanon, Hezbollah and individuals striving to live under the ‘Islamic sphere of influence’, offsetting stereotypes and dominant historiography. This volume is a must-read for scholars, researchers, media analysts and policy groups engaged with the Middle East. It will be particularly relevant to the disciplines of Sociology, Social Anthropology, Geography, Psychology, International Relations and Area Studies with a focus on Lebanon.

Book Description
The author, a New York Times reporter, traces the invention and mass distribution of the AK-47 assault rifle, and its effects on war. He traces the invention of the assault rifle, following the miniaturization of rapid-fire arms from the American Civil War, through World War I and Vietnam, to present-day Afghanistan, where Kalashnikovs and their knockoffs number as many as 100 million, one for every seventy persons on earth. It is the weapon of state repression, as well as revolution, civil war, genocide, drug wars, and religious wars; and it is the arms of terrorists, guerrillas, boy soldiers, and thugs. From its inception to its use by more than fifty national armies around the world, to its role in modern-day Afghanistan, he discusses how the deadly weapon has helped alter world history.

The Kalashnikov AK-47 is the most ubiquitous assault rifle in the world, with more AK-47s and its variants in use than any other individual small arm. Supported by photographs and original artwork, this book takes a look at the complete history of the weapon, discussing its design, development, and usage, taking its story from the great armies of the Soviet Union to the insurgents and criminal gangs that often employ the weapon today.

Book Description
The AK47 assault rifle is the world's most prolific and iconic weapon with more than 80 million produced. Today, the largest threat the armies of the U.S., U.K., and NATO are faced with is not nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons but man's real weapon of mass destruction, the AK47. Much of what is written about it, both in books and in the general media, is out of date, technically wrong, incomplete, and hard to understand. Nigel Bennett sets out to truly demystify the AK47 in an easy to read and see format. He takes the reader through the three original basic models of Soviet design--the AK47, the AKM, and the AK74--and then the vast differing worldwide production models. The book gives in-depth coverage of the internal workings of the AK47, highlighting what makes it the "perfect" killing machine.

Book Description
What is it like to deploy to Afghanistan? Take a glimpse inside a yearlong experience told through photos and uncensored commentary. Bill "Rooster" Jones volunteered for duty in Afghanistan in September 2007 through August 2008 and served as an Engineer in both the mountainous Hindu-Kush region in the north and the violent and dangerous Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan. He kept in touch with friends and family religiously, chronicling his journey through photos and a running commentary that is direct, descriptive, and often humorous. This book captures what he saw, felt, and thought throughout his tour. Unlike most books about war, this story is not about politics, strategy or tactics. It explains what it was like to be there. Rooster captures the essence of place - the smells, sights, and feelings that we would all experience if we had been in his boots. Join Lieutenant Colonel Jones and see what it is like to work and travel in a war-torn country.--Book review.

Book Description
Abdul Zaeef describes growing up in poverty in rural Kandahar province, which he fled for Pakistan after the Russian invasion of 1979. Zaeef joined the jihad in 1983, was seriously wounded in several encounters and met many leading figures of the resistance, including the current Taliban head, Mullah Mohammad Omar. Disgusted by the lawlessness that ensued after the Soviet withdrawal, Zaeef was one among the former mujahidin who were closely involved in the emergence of the Taliban, in 1994. He then details his Taliban career, including negotiations with Ahmed Shah Massoud and role as ambassador to Pakistan during 9/11. In early 2002 Zaeef was handed over to American forces in Islamabad and spent four and a half years in prison in Bagram and Guantanamo before being released without charge. My Life with the Taliban offers insights into the Pashtun village communities that are the Taliban's bedrock and helps to explain what drives men like Zaeef to take up arms against the foreigners who are foolish enough to invade his homeland.
