They had very little money, no possessions, couldn't speak the language, and had no idea the difficulties they would encounter. Baba Anna came with them, and she proved to be a wonderful addition to the family. They joined St. Mary's RC church, and all the children of school age were enrolled in St. Mary's catholic school. The sisters of St. Agnes taught them and were very strict, but very effective in their strictness. There were quite a few Slovakian families in their small village, so they were able to continue to celebrate some of their customs, which helped them still enjoy what was familiar to them. They built a Slovak hall where their harvest festivals took place, with the songs, dancing, and crowning of the king and queen of the harvest. As the children grew and became adults, they never lost their love, respect, and closeness to their aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Our parents would be proud of their children for the love they have and share with each other. This is a tribute to them for what they taught them as they were growing up.

"The year 2000 ... marks the sesquicentennial of California's statehood. California entered the Union on September 9, 1850--fewer than three years after the discovery of gold at Sutter's sawmill on January 24, 1848. Such a transformation in so short a span of time seems remarkable itself but not unanticipated, given the great interest shown by the English, French, Russians, and Americans during the 1830s and 1840s in exploiting Mexican California's abundant natural resources. The title for my book, Keepers of Golden Dreams, came to me in a dream. I had been pondering over what to name it for quite some time and couldn't think of anything appropriate. Then one morning, I woke up with a start and there it was, ablaze in my mind. My parents came to America to create a better life for themselves and the family they hoped to have in the future. My father came first, and my mother and grandmother came shortly after. The people believed that there was so much wealth in this country that the streets were lined with gold. While growing up, my mother told us about her life growing up in Slovakia, and I would listen trying to picture how it must have been and how hard it must have been to leave all that they loved for a better life. When my husband and I married, we came directly to New Jersey to live. I was the only daughter who moved away from my mother. I missed my parents and siblings and my life back home. After many years, I began to think about what I missed and realized that my mother had experienced the same emotions. I realized that the future generations should know what my parents went through to leave everything and go to a place where the customs and language were different and with very little money. I wanted them to know the story of their lives, so I began to write about them and their journey.
