Book Description
Those unfamiliar with modern alchemical criticism, even if they have some acquaintance with the mystical labyrinth of the turba philosophorum , will probably learn with astonishment that the opinions of competent judges are divided not only upon the methods of the mysterious Hermetic science, but upon the object of alchemy itself. That it is concerned with transmutation is granted, but with the transmutation of metals, or of any physical substance, into material gold, is strenuously denied by a select section of reputable students of occultism. The transcendental theory of alchemy which they expound is steadily gaining favour, though the two text-books which at present represent it are both out of print and both exceedingly scarce. In the year 1850 "A Suggestive Inquiry concerning the Hermetic Mystery and Alchemy, being an attempt to recover the Ancient Experiment of Nature," was published anonymously in London by a lady of high intellectual gifts, but was almost immediately withdrawn for reasons unknown, and which have given occasion, in consequence, to several idle speculations. This curious and meritorious volume, quaintly written in the manner of the last century, originated the views which are in question and opened the controversy.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Lives of Alchemystical Philosophers: With a Critical Catalogue of Books in Occult Chemistry, and a Selection of the Most Celebrated Treatises on the Theory and Practice of the Hermetic Art The universal chemistry, by which the, science of alchemy opens the knowledge of all nature, being founded on first principles, forms analogy with Whatever knowledge is founded on the same first principles. In this view, Moses, describing the creation, is an universal chemist, and reveals at the same time, the creation of the philosophers' stone, in this process: The earth was' without form, and void; 2, Darkness was on the face of the deep; The spirit of God moved on the face of the waters. Book Description
"This book traces the continued existence of the spiritual alchemy of rebirth in heterodox and specifically Boehmist circles from around 1600 to the early twentieth century. The basic claim of continuity from Boehme to Atwood argued here is not new. A particularly apt expression may be found in F. Sherwood Taylor's The Alchemists of 1949, in which the founding editor of Ambix notes 'the existence of a school of mystical alchemists whose purpose was self-regeneration.' With Boehme as an important early exponent, this 'tendency culminated in 1850' with Atwood's Suggestive Inquiry into the Hermetic Mystery. Taylor's statement, it turns out, could hardly have been more accurate yet has so far lacked the support of a comprehensive presentation. This led Principe and Newman to describe such claims of continuity regarding spiritual alchemy as mere 'conjecture' without 'clear historical evidence.' This book marshals that hitherto elusive evidence, much of it found in obscure manuscript sources, and thus documents the continuity of spiritual alchemy that links the early-modern to the modern era"--

Book Description
The Diary of an Alchemist: In its attempt to demonstrate the applicability of the fundamental principles of Mysticism to the things of the physical realm Alchemy apparently failed and ended its days in fraud. It appears, however, that this true aim of alchemistic art - particularly the demonstration of the validity of the theory that all the various forms of matter are produced by an evolutionary process from some one primal element or quintessence -- is being realised by recent research in the domain of physics and chemical science. The object of the alchemist’s search was to satisfy their material needs, their intellectual capacities, and their spiritual yearning. Alchemists of the nobler sort always made the first of these objects subsidiary to the other two". There is a distinct difference between what may be called esoteric and exoteric alchemy. The latter has an outer and more direct approach in which transmutation is attempted through the employment of purely physical forces. This has been the main attraction for the quacks and the curious, and has succeeded in concealing (mercifully) the esoteric approach to alchemy. The true alchemist is someone capable of radiating his essence, thus affecting the centermost being of those about him. This work, biographical in nature, reveals the author's own struggle in working the basic theme of alchemy, which is the acceptance and expression of Cosmic Fire in the service of humanity. This is the path of a fire-god .... his birth, initiation into and baptism by Fire. The alchemists saw the likeness of it in so many chemical reactions in their laboratories that they were struck by certain parallels. After all, they were witnessing the birth of modern chemistry with all its inorganic phenomena of amalgams, silver, gold and mercurial platings, without any of the rationale which a chemist possesses today. This thoroughly researched volume contains many excerpts from the author’s diary, images, lists and drawings.
