Book Description
Excerpt from The Allied Countries and the Jews The addresses collected in this little book were delivered at the Sabbath morning Services of Temple Emanu-El during the autumn and early winter of 1917-18. I tried to give a birds eye view of the relation of the Jews to the several countries with which America is now associated in the War for the defense of democracy. Also, I tried to point out how intimately the advance of democracy has been connected with the improvement of the lot of the Jew. Forming part of Divine Services, the addresses had to be short, but I hope they contained enough to illumine the subject and to stimulate thought, if not further study, as well as patriotic action. In the present form, the substance is offered of the spoken addresses. The address on Russia may seem more hopeful than the situation today would warrant. Right now, unfortunately, chaos reigns in Russia, and the Jews are said to suffer terribly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Jews, From the War With Rome to the Present Time It will, of course, be answered that to charge our Lord with blasphemy and setting up of a strange god, is simply to beg the whole question at issue between Jew and Christian. Indeed, considering that the Hebrew Scriptures distinctly declare the Messiah to be God1 (psa. Xlv. 6; Isa. Vii. I4: ix. 6, etc), according to this view of the matter, at what ever period He might come, it must be the duty of the Jews to put Him to death, as soon as He declared His true character. It might be asked-how were the Jews to know that Jesus was really what He proclaimed Himself? Our answer is, that in the fulfilment of prophecy in Him, in the exercise of His miraculous powers, and the superhuman holiness of His teaching, they had sufficient evidence that He was indeed the Christ. They had, in fact, t/ize evidence of it which Divine wisdom accounted sufficient. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Popular History of the Jews, Vol. 2 Imitating the Roman example of proscription and confiscation, Herod's coffers were soon filled to overflowing with the confiscated property of his victims, and this enabled him to retain the favor of Antony who was ever in need of money for his riotous living and for satisfying the greed of Cleo patra. The people bore all these outrages resign edly; they were exhausted with the uprisings and the wars that continued, with slight interruption, for thirty-three years, since the death of Queen Alexandra, and that ruined the prosperity of the nation. They were longing for quietude and were glad to be ruled by a king who, outwardly at least, was an adherent of Judaism and who, it was to be hoped, would leave the customs of the fathers in tact. Moreover, Herod's shrewdness and energy in overcoming all obstacles gained him the admira tion and devotion of not a few people, and Herod did not fail to reward them richly for their loyalty. Oh the whole, though, Herod had little confidence in the natives; he felt that their dissatisfaction with the means he employed in gaining his mastery over them and with the manner in which he maintained it, could not be eradicated altogether. Accordingly, in filling positions of honor, he gave the preference to extra-palestinian Judaeans. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Restoration of the Jews: The Crisis of All Nations It was in this century that the Jews, as we have before noticed, received a most sensible blow in the total sup pression of the patriarchs. Theodosius and Valentinian were the two monarchs who appropriated that revenue, which they had been wont to draw from their scattered brethren, to their own treasury, by which means the. Patriarchal dignity was more effectually sn pressed than if it had been directly annulled by an e iet. In the IV est, the Jews enjoyed the full exercise of their religion under Honorius, who, much to his honour, enacted a law in favour of toleration. A strange affair happened about this time in the island of Candia, where the Jews were very rich numerous. One Moses pretending to be the Messiah, ran up and down and through every town and village of the island, persuading the Jews to follow him, and to be ready for. Him on the day, and at the place ap pointed, and he would lead them safe through the sea to Canaan. A vast multitude were deluded, and threw themselves from a precipice into the deep, and were drowned. It is pretended that a great number of Jews were, about this time, converted to Christianity by means of divers miracles, which were wrought by the virtue of the holy relics brought from Jerusalem. Book Description
Excerpt from Strictures on the Past History of the Jews, and on the Future Prospects of That People But among all the nations that have appeared on the face Of the earth, there is not one whose history is more remarkable, more replete with interest, than that Of the Jews. Their history commences with the earliest periods. From among all the nations Israel was the only people whom God selected as his own. Their religious and their civil system were alike sanctioned by Him. Their priesthood was the one priesthood he owned as his, and their kings were rightly named the Lord's anointed their city, the place which he had chosen to put his name there the city Of the Great King; (matt. V. 35) Of which He said, Mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually. (2 Chron. Vii. TO them the Almighty revealed his holy will; them he made the depositories Of his holy law; to them pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving Of the law, and the service Of God, and the promises from their centre rose that light who was to lighten the Gentiles; theirs are the fathers, Of whom, as concerning the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Book Description
Excerpt from An Appeal to the Jewish People It is true, I have penetrated far into the Holy of Holies; I have boldly - my enemies say madly crossed the Rubicon, and trodden an unfrequented path, hitherto shunned like the pest by every Jew, and especially bv their Rabbis. I have paid homage to the founder of Christianity, and rendered Him praise as the Redeemer of the the Saviour, the long-expected Messiah of the Jews. But, humanly speaking, do not our eventful, truly epochal times, require extraordinary means, bold thoughts, and thorough reforms? Are not new men now more than ever needed, who, conscious of the purpose oftheir being, shall be as new_channels of good to all peoples of every family and race? And is not this also the need 'of Israel? Scattered in all the world, fallen out in himself and with himself, dismembered, disunited Israel, who has yearned so longingly, and yet in vain, for the coming of the Angel of the Covenantl' \vhat! Who! Can effect the regeneration and resurrection of Israel? W ho shall bring to pass the prophesied miracle of Ezekiel? (xxxvii.)
