Excerpt from The Allied Countries and the Jews The addresses collected in this little book were delivered at the Sabbath morning Services of Temple Emanu-El during the autumn and early winter of 1917-18. I tried to give a birds eye view of the relation of the Jews to the several countries with which America is now associated in the War for the defense of democracy. Also, I tried to point out how intimately the advance of democracy has been connected with the improvement of the lot of the Jew. Forming part of Divine Services, the addresses had to be short, but I hope they contained enough to illumine the subject and to stimulate thought, if not further study, as well as patriotic action. In the present form, the substance is offered of the spoken addresses. The address on Russia may seem more hopeful than the situation today would warrant. Excerpt from The History of the Jews, From the War With Rome to the Present Time It will, of course, be answered that to charge our Lord with blasphemy and setting up of a strange god, is simply to beg the whole question at issue between Jew and Christian. Indeed, considering that the Hebrew Scriptures distinctly declare the Messiah to be God1 (psa. Xlv. 6; Isa. Vii. I4: ix. 6, etc), according to this view of the matter, at what ever period He might come, it must be the duty of the Jews to put Him to death, as soon as He declared His true character. It might be asked-how were the Jews to know that Jesus was really what He proclaimed Himself? Our answer is, that in the fulfilment of prophecy in Him, in the exercise of His miraculous powers, and the superhuman holiness of His teaching, they had sufficient evidence that He was indeed the Christ. The people bore all these outrages resign edly; they were exhausted with the uprisings and the wars that continued, with slight interruption, for thirty-three years, since the death of Queen Alexandra, and that ruined the prosperity of the nation. They were longing for quietude and were glad to be ruled by a king who, outwardly at least, was an adherent of Judaism and who, it was to be hoped, would leave the customs of the fathers in tact. Moreover, Herod's shrewdness and energy in overcoming all obstacles gained him the admira tion and devotion of not a few people, and Herod did not fail to reward them richly for their loyalty. Oh the whole, though, Herod had little confidence in the natives; he felt that their dissatisfaction with the means he employed in gaining his mastery over them and with the manner in which he maintained it, could not be eradicated altogether.
