Excerpt: ...Joseph Yorke had been Ambassador at the Hague since I752, and Lord Grantham, besides his brief tenure of the Foreign Oflice, had been Ambassador at Madrid for the eight years previous to 1782, and on the declaration of war refused any longer to acce t the salary to which he was still legally entitled." A r shorter term of service entitles a diplomatist of the present day to a pension of 17oo;' and the amount to be received by Lord Grantham and Sir Joseph Yorke was 2000. To the arguments that these grants of money were contrary to Burke's Bill, which precluded the King from giving any pension larger than 300 a year, the answer was obvious. Burke's Bill had not yet come into operation, and when it did, pensions for diplomatic service were expressly exempted from its operation, while it was acknowledged on all hands that an exception would have to be made in the Act in favour of the person who should fill the high oflice of Chancellor.' It is also worth observing that neither the Chancellor nor Sir Joseph Yorke were adherents of Shelburne. I The King considered Dr. Shipley's opinions to be tainted with Socinianism, and suspected Lord Shelburne's recommendation for preferment on the same ground. He also feared that Fox would make the same recommendation, and he determined at all ha2ards to beat both the outgoing and incoming Ministers over the appointment. How he succeeded in doing so and how Dr. Moore, Bishop of Bangor, got appointed is related in Wraxall, Memoirs, iii. 347. See also Ailesbury Papers. Hist. MSS. Com. The Georgian Menagerie
Author: Christopher Plumb
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 085773928X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 200
Book Description
In the eighteenth century, it would not have been impossible to encounter an elephant or a kangaroo making its way down the Strand, heading towards the menagerie of Mr. Pidcock at the Exeter Change. Pidcock's was just one of a number of commercial menagerists who plied their trade in London in this period the predecessors to the zoological societies of the Victorian era. As the British Empire expanded and seaborne trade flooded into London's ports, the menagerists gained access to animals from the most far-flung corners of the globe, and these strange creatures became the objects of fascination and wonder. Many aristocratic families sought to create their own private menageries with which to entertain their guests, while for the less well-heeled, touring exhibitions of exotic creatures both alive and dead satisfied their curiosity for the animal world. While many exotic creatures were treasured as a form of spectacle, others fared less well turtles went into soups and civet cats were sought after for ingredients for perfume. In this entertaining and enlightening book, Plumb introduces the many tales of exotic animals in London.

Trials of Lady Jane Douglas
Author: Karl Sabbagh
Publisher: eBook Partnership
ISBN: 0992627087
Category : Scandals
Languages : en
Pages : 481
Book Description
The truth about what happened to the beautiful Lady Jane Douglas in Paris in 1748 has never been established. Did she give birth to twin boys in a bug-infested boarding house, or did she buy her two sons from poor French peasants to ensure that the distinguished line of Douglas survived in Scotland? The exploration of this 18th century mystery took place in public over twenty years, culminating in a dramatic session in the House of Lords. Combining, as it did, issues of sex, power, money, politics, and aristocracy, 'the Douglas Cause' was a fertile source of gossip and tittle-tattle. Karl Sabbagh gets as near as anyone ever will to the truth, in a definitive account of a case which divided the chattering classes at every level from the burgers of Edinburgh to the English Royal Family.

Enlightenment and Utility
Author: Emmanuelle de Champs
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316300692
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 253
Book Description
Jeremy Bentham, the founder of classical utilitarianism, was a seminal figure in the history of modern political thought. This lively monograph presents the numerous French connections of an emblematic British thinker. Perhaps more than any other intellectual of his time, Bentham engaged with contemporary events and people in France, even writing in French in the 1780s. Placing Bentham's thought in the context of the French-language Enlightenment through to the post-Revolutionary era, Emmanuelle de Champs makes the case for a historical study of 'Global Bentham'. Examining previously unpublished sources, she traces the circulation of Bentham's letters, friends, manuscripts, and books in the French-speaking world. This study in transnational intellectual history reveals how utilitarianism, as a doctrine, was both the product of, and a contribution to, French-language political thought at a key time in European history. The debates surrounding utilitarianism in France cast new light on the making of modern Liberalism.
