Southeast Alaska is a remote area, located approximately 700 miles north of Seattle, Washington. Most of the region's goods are imported by barge, creating logistical and economic challenges not faced by many other parts of the United States. In this context, we used life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate the potential environmental impact on global warming potential (GWP) of converting home heating systems from heating oil to wood pellets in southeast Alaska. Once the current level (status quo) was established, we evaluated imported pellet utilization at 20-, 40- and 100-percent penetration into the residential heating oil markets. We also modeled local production of wood pellets in southeast Alaska, assuming a 20-cercent penetration. Our research found that reductions in GWP resulting from the conversion to wood pellets ranged from 10 to 51 percent, with the greatest reductions being associated with the highest levels of imported pellets. The scenario of producing wood pellets in southeast Alaska to meet local needs had a reduction in GWP of 14 percent (versus the status quo).

A Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) was conducted in order to compare its environmental impact. The study is divided into 4 parts: Chapter 1 describes the goal and scope of the LCA, Chapters 2 and 3 provides information of the current electricity matrix in the locations where the study is developed, as well as the most common heating technologies. Chapters 4 and 5 describes the proposed scenarios and environmental impact results. Projections of economic growth in Chile in the following years involve higher energy demand and therefore, the need of an efficient energy supply in order to ensure both sustainable and economic growth. In that context, consumption of firewood represents an important role, considering the high availability of this energy source in Chile. In the entire country, the capacity of energy generation from biomass is estimated to be from 310 MW to 470 MW. The main use of firewood is for residential heating, however, firewood is associated not only with environmental issues, but also with public health problems. Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) is an air pollutant that are two and one half microns or less in width, that is an issue when reaches high levels. These particles are able to travel deeply into the respiratory tract, reaching the lungs, exposure to fine particles can produce asthma and hearth disease. Long term exposure to fine particulate matter could be related with increased rates of chronic bronchitis, reduced lung function and increased mortality from lung cancer and heart disease. Other alternatives commonly used are liquefied natural gas (LNG), electric heaters, refined oil, etc. Data from the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) shows the low air quality of various cities in the Center and South of Chile.

It is a summary of the research presented at the 6th International Conference on Renewable Energy Sources (ICORES19), which took place in Krynica, Poland, in June 2019. This event is the most recognizable scientific meeting connected to RES in Poland. From the very beginning, this conference has been a unique occasion for gathering Polish and international researchers’ perspectives on renewable energy sources and balancing them against governmental policy considerations. Accordingly, the conference has also offered panels to discuss best practices and solutions with local entrepreneurs and federal government bodies. The meeting attracts not only scientists but also industry representatives, as well as local and federal government personnel. We are open to new and fresh ideas concerning renewable energy, which is why so many scientists from Central and Eastern Europe visit Krynica to discuss the “Green Future” of this region.
