Tennyson in the spring of 1857, Mr. Gottschalk writes from Havana to a friend in New York of a brilliant entertainment given him there by the captain-general, at which banquet six hundred guests were present. His first concert was to be given the following night at the Tacon Theatre. Maretzek, who at that time occupied the house with his Italian opera troupe, resigned the use of the theatre in favor of him for one evening. To the brilliancy and success of this entertainment the journals of the day bear ample witness. A few extracts from a letter to a friend will show how earnestly he enjoyed himself. "The sky, the air, the flowers, the fruits, are full of music to me; and, although I cannot say as much for the. ranque, unsympathetic voices of the people, I find enough pensively-melancholy beauty in some of the faces I see to keep me in the minore you love so well. Especially children. How dreamily beautiful they are! Such eyes! you can look into them, and fairly lose yourself in a labyrinth more bewitching than the one owned by that cruel papa of Mademoiselle Ariadne! By the way, study the orchestration of ' Ariadne.' To me it is full of soft, seductive wiles; you can lose yourself in untying the silken braids of harmony; and when untied, and you hold them in your comprehension, it is nothing but womanly love which can weave them again. Now I recall the criticism you made on a similar harmony. Do you remember that matinee at the academy (the day the little lame boy brought me the tuberoses, and said he wanted to give them to me because 1 was Louis Gottschalk, ...

Starr paints for us a striking portrait of Louis Moreau Gottschalk's childhood in 1830s New Orleans, a city madly devoted to music, where opera companies, music halls, fiddlers and banjo-pickers, church choirs, and Army bands all contributed to what Starr calls "the most stunning manifestation of Jacksonian democracy in the realm of culture to be found anywhere in America". We meet Gottschalk's French-speaking maternal grandmother and also his African-American nurse Sally, both of whom regaled him with the songs, legends, and lore of the Creole world, which would inform some of his finest music.
