Book Description
Excerpt from Life and Letters of James David Forbes This biography is the work of three writers, each working separately and, in a great measure, inde pendently of. The other two. This subdivision of labour has, I am aware, serious drawbacks, and would not have been resorted to, had any one person been found who could have undertaken adequately to describe the various aspects of Forbes' life and work. But, in default of a writer who could do this, it was thought better to portion out the work to three writers, than to have it inadequately done by one. No doubt the book has -ih this way lost something in symmetry, but it is hoped that it may have gained more in thoroughness and completeness. Book Description
Excerpt from The Letters of James Beattie, LL. D, Vol. 1: Chronologically Arranged From Sir W. Forbes's Collection The author shows great knowledge of mankind, and of human nature. He possesses an inexhaus tible fund of original sentiment, a happy talent at some kinds of description, particularly conversation pieces; he delineates some characters with ma sterly and distinguishing strokes; he seems to be well acquainted with the human heart, and with the particular emotions that arise in it on particu lar occasions. The fervour wherewith he recom mends religion and virtue, intimates that he is truly in earnest, and that his heart goes along with his pen. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life and Letters of James Gates Percival When I began the work, several years later, amid the pressing engagements of a parish priest, my progress was slow and discouraging. I had never seen or known the poet; and had not his friends generously and confidingly come to my aid, and given me their kind assistance, I could not have gone on. Indeed, my work has been mainly and chiefly the editing of the poet's own letters and papers, and the reminiscences of those who knew him intimately. Much material was furnished by the partially prepared memoir of the late Erasmus D. North, M. D., whose work, had his life been spared, would have been a far more complete delineation of the poet than mine. His surviving brother has freely imparted to me facts concerning his earlier life. His friends in New Haven, Professor Noah Porter, the late Professor Silliman, the late Edward C. Herrick, Professor James D. Dana, the late Professor Goodrich, Henry White, William G. Webster, Benjamin Noyes, Charles Monson, and Mrs. Aaron N. Skinner have assisted me whenever they could; and I am indebted to many other citizens, whose names I am not permitted to give, for essential help. Book Description
An essential work on the origins of statistics The Rise of Statistical Thinking, 1820–1900 explores the history of statistics from the field's origins in the nineteenth century through to the factors that produced the burst of modern statistical innovation in the early twentieth century. Theodore Porter shows that statistics was not developed by mathematicians and then applied to the sciences and social sciences. Rather, the field came into being through the efforts of social scientists, who saw a need for statistical tools in their examination of society. Pioneering statistical physicists and biologists James Clerk Maxwell, Ludwig Boltzmann, and Francis Galton introduced statistical models to the sciences by pointing to analogies between their disciplines and the social sciences. A new preface by the author looks at how the book has remained relevant since its initial publication, and considers the current place of statistics in scientific research.

Book Description
Excerpt from Forty Years' Familiar Letters of James W. Alexander, D. D, Vol. 1 of 2: Constituting, With the Notes, a Memoir of His Life The highest advantages Of the method adopted would have been sacrificed had the editor, for the sake Of produc ing an appearance Of uniformity in his friend's Opinions and positions, suppressed the evidence Of such fluctuations as every independent and investigating mind is open to. With this View I have suffered to stand some diversities Of his judgment, at different times, or in different lights, on points Of theology, church order, church policy, slavery, and other topics. His views on some important questions may have been modified, without any trace Of the change appearing in the letters; and I have been particularly re quested to notice, under this head, that in the last years Of his life, he saw the importance of a far stricter rule in Observing the Lord's day, and in the allowance Of fash ion able amusements, than would appear from some occa sioual statements in these volumes. And I am sure that I should not have been excused had I at all subdued the light and playful tone in which many Of the letters are written, or attempted any amend ment Of the abrupt transitions and Off-hand phrases so characteristic Of the unstudied, unrevised expression Of the uppermost thoughts at the moment Of writing. TO have changed his manner would have been as great nu faithfulness to the full delineation Of my correspondent, as to have concealed his sentiments. It may reasonably be expected, also, that there will be accorded to these letters the indulgence almost as claimable for a correspondence Of this kind, as for ordinary conversa tion, Of strong, and even exaggerated, language; when every thing in the connexion and style shows that these allowances are due. It would be the highest injustice to throw the private writings Of another before the world, if such a consideration as this could not be depended on.
