Rivalités et conflits ont laissé une empreinte profonde sur l'histoire des relations entre la France et les îles Britanniques et occupent encore une place considérable dans l'historiographie.L'étude des liens personnels, des réseaux et des solidarités, dans un contexte marqué par l'influence des sciences sociales, permet peut-être d'ouvrir l'horizon sur d'autres perspectives, et de reconstituer, entre ces deux espaces, des échanges que la documentation ne laisse pas toujours directement appréhender. Grâce aux travaux comparatistes, elle peut aussi contribuer à renouveler la compréhension de phénomènes longtemps perçus de manière isolée par les écoles historiques française et britannique. La table ronde organisée par le Groupe de recherche 2136 du CNRS " France-îles Britanniques " en mai 2002 à l'université de Glasgow, s'est précisément donné ce thème de réflexion pour objet : les seize communications d'historiens français et britanniques réunies dans ce volume abordent des notions qui vont de l'individu à la parenté en passant par l'amitié, le voisinage, la cour, l'entourage noble, l'" affinité ", la clientèle, le cercle littéraire, et cela à partir de sources d'une extrême diversité - actes de la pratique, correspondance, héraldique, images, récits, journaux intimes.Le choix délibéré d'un temps long, du Moyen Age au XXe siècle, permet aussi de confronter les évolutions sociales comme des méthodes historiographiques souvent très différentes. Le recours à des grilles de lecture variées, qu'il s'agisse de la méthode de la network analysis ou de la prosopographie, fait surgir des liens souvent discrets, ou bien activés dans des circonstances très spécifiques, comme la succession, et permet de mieux cerner le contexte de développements connus par ailleurs, comme l'invention scientifique ou la circulation des idées politiques. En dernier ressort, c'est peut-être au coeur d'un faisceau d'approches et d'expériences diverses que la notion de réseau peut se révéler la plus efficace.

Jean Bodin was a figure of great importance in European intellectual history, known as a jurist, associate of kings and courtiers in sixteenth-century France, and author of influential works in the fields of constitutional and social thought, historical writing, witchcraft, and a great deal else besides. Best known for his contribution to formulating the modern doctrine of sovereignty, Bodin was a scholar of exceptional range, whose works provoked controversy in his own time and have continued to do so down the centuries. In recent years religion has resurfaced amongst academics, in many ways replacing class as the key to understanding Europe's historical development. This has resulted in an explosion of studies revisiting issues of religious change, confessional violence and holy war during the early modern period. But the interpretation of the European wars of religion still remains largely defined by national boundaries, tied to specific processes of state building as well as nation building. In order to more thoroughly interrogate these concepts and assumptions, this volume focusses on terms repeatedly used and misused in public debates such as "religious violence" and "holy warfare" within the context of military conflicts commonly labelled "religious wars". The chapters not only focus on the role of religion, but also on the emerging state as a driver of the escalation of violence in the so-called age of religious war. By using different methodological and theoretical approaches historians, philosophers, and theologians engage in an interdisciplinary debate that contributes to a better understanding of the religio-political situation of early modern Europe and the interpretation of violent conflicts interpreted as religious conflicts today. By adopting a multi-disciplinary approach, new and innovative perspectives are opened up that question if in fact religion was a primary driving force behind these conflicts.

The first comprehensive study of this war helps us understand how each country to defend the frontier, and the political issues which drove the Anglo-Scottish wars of the 1520s. The Anglo-Scottish War of 1522-1524 saw the mobilisation of tens of thousands of men and vast amounts of resources in both England and Scotland. Beyond its British context, the war had a European significance: it formed an element in the wider Valois-Habsburg struggles over Italy, with the complex systems of alliances spreading the repercussions of this struggle far across the continent and to the borders of England and Scotland. Recent years have seen the emergence of a renewed debate around the status of the Anglo-Scottish frontier and the wider political and social conditions which predominated in the borderlands of each kingdom. Although there has been a move to present the Anglo-Scottish border as a porous frontier where the populations on either side were closely connected, these neighbourly links imploded rapidly in wartime when frontier populations were co-opted into a national struggle. It is significant that borderers were responsible for inflicting the heaviest violence on each other during the war. Drawing on an unprecedented access to English and Sottish sources of the conflict, this book offers an important new contribution to both Scottish and English history as well as the wider military history of late medieval and early modern Europe. Aspects of military mobilisation, logistics, the defence of frontiers, the use of violence against civilians and wartime espionage feature prominently.

In 2010, David Bates presented the Ford Lectures in British History at the University of Oxford, and The Normans and Empire is the book which was born from these lectures. It provides an interpretative analysis of the history of the cross-Channel empire created by William the Conqueror in 1066 to its end in 1204 when the duchy of Normandy was conquered by the French king, Philip Augustus, the so-called 'Loss of Normandy'. This volume emphasizes the cross-Channel and Continental dimensions of the subject, and uses modern approaches to suggest new interpretations. Bates proposes that historians of the Normans can learn from the methods of social scientists and historians of other periods of history - such as making use of such tools as life-stories and biographies - and he employs such methods to offer an interpretative history of the Normans, as well as a broader history of England, the British Isles, and Northern France in the eleventh and twelfth centuries.
