Heritage is not what we see in front of us, it is what we make of it in our heads. Heritage sites have been connected to a range of identarian projects, both spatial and non-spatial. One of the most common links with heritage has been national identity. This book stresses that heritage has developed powerful links to regional and local identities. Contributors deal explicitly with regions of heavy industry in different parts of the world, exploring non-spatial forms of identity: including class, religious, ethnic, racial, gender and cultural identities. In many heritage sites, non-spatial forms of identity are interlinked with spatial ones. Civil society action has been important in representations of regional identities and industrial-heritage campaigns. Region-branding seems to determine the ultimate success of industrial heritage, a process that is closely connected to the marketing of regions to provide a viable economic future and attract tourism to the region. Selected case-studies on coal and steel producing regions in this book provide the first global survey of how regions of heavy industry deal with their industrial heritage, and what it means for regional identity and region-branding. Ce livre multilingue retrace à l'aide de magnifiques illustrations et documents originaux le travail du projet européen "Patrimoine industriel entre terre et mer, pour un réseau européen d'écomusées". Ce projet, illustré par une exposition itinérante présentée sur chacun des sites partenaires du projet, a pris pour territoire d'intervention quelques unes des zones particulièrement sensibles des rivages de notre Europe, là où le contact entre mers intérieures et sol continental s'établit dans des conditions quasi conflictuelles mais en même temps génératrices de richesses et d'initiatives de la part des hommes. Dans un tel cadre, l'étude et la préservation du patrimoine des activités industrielles sont particulièrement stimulantes pour l'esprit et pour le concept même de notre patrimoine culturel en général, car là se trouve l'un des terrains de la nécessaire réconciliation entre patrimoine de l'industrie et patrimoine de l'environnement. Entre terre et mer, se sont élaborés des paysages culturels où se croisent itinéraires et traces des hommes aux champs, dans les forêts et sur l'eau, mais aussi dans les mines, sur les chantiers portuaires et sur la ligne de front des littoraux. Un second aspect de l'opération réside dans la proposition de moyens qui puissent permettre la pérénnisation, au bénéfice du plus large public possible, du résultat des analyses de cas menées à propos de chacun des sites, afin de développer la sensibilisation des populations locales à la sauvegarde de toutes sortes d'éléments de patrimoine qui sont à la fois fragiles et d'une grande originalité. Speaking about governance is challenging. The term has been vastly used and misused. But today, when the feverish popularity of the concept is probably in decline, we rest with one solid conviction at least: that social, economic, cultural and institutional processes are governed not only through government (be it national or local) with its legislative, administrative and jurisdictional mechanisms, but through a larger array of different actors and factors. These include schools and universities, citizens' associations, public opinion, economic corporations, non-governmental organizations, learned societies, unions, media, international agencies, clubs, consultants etc. In fact, the reader is going to meet quite a few of these actors in this publication; they are the unavoidable characters involved in the story the authors have set out to tell.
