Book Description
Excerpt from Letters to a Friend A few sentences of the sermon have been omitted, and a few added. It will be understood that the sermon dealt only with the more general aspects of his career. My personal acquaintance with him was too late and too slight to justify any detailed criticism or eulogy. Let me freely speak to you of this patriarch of our national Church in his two capacities of a universal scholar and of a wise ecclesiastical statesman. Book Description
Excerpt from Letters to Unknown Friends They have been serviceable to me for another reason: They have Often compelled me to question my own traditional beliefs and to find a reason which I could give to another for a hope which had not been founded on reason, but on an inherited habit of mind. That I have clearer and more definite conceptions of both theological and spirit al problems, yes, and of ethical problems also, is largely due to the service which these correspondents have rendered by compelling me to investigate the questions which they have addressed to me. Book Description
Excerpt from Letters Form My Friend, the Knight It has been amply demonstrated that the assembling of a party of patriots and the adoption of a constitution does not form a perfect system of government. The constitution may be ever so carefully considered, yet the first thing necessary under it is the passing of laws enforcing its provisions, qualifying or exaggerating its phrases. A vast system of courts is maintained in an effort to make its broad terms fit the varied and intricate interests of humanity. It is acknowledged that a republic and constitutional government is the best that can be secured in a world where selfishness and greed at least have an equal chance with the better qualities of mankind, but sometimes we are heart-sick at the evasion of proper regulation, the contempt for law and order, the trampling upon the rights of the weaker by the very fact of the law's imperfections. Sometimes we wish there were a good king or a brave Knight going about correcting these evils that a cold, inanimate force called law is not able to remedy. Sometimes we wish there were a higher law that would consider nothing but justice and equity. It is thoughts like these that started the Knight of the Twentieth Century upon his mission. Whether we approve of all his acts or not, we agree with his reasoning and applaud his good intentions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Unknown Friends: A Civil War Romance; Letters of My Father and My Mother The contents of this book will I hope give the same pleasure to my children which they have given to me, and it is only necessary for me to preface the little volume with a few explanatory notes. As a young girl I remember hearing my mother speak Of her Civil War romance with my father and of certain letters which she had treasured during the years. After my father's death, which occurred on New Year's Day 1 908, mother again referred to the letters and said that she wished me to have them after her death. We had the joy of having her with us alert in mind and body until just before her ninetieth birth day. It was not until a few years later that the letters were discovered in an old japanned box among her effects. They have been printed exactly as written with no attempt at editing, as it is my feeling that any changes on my part would only serve to lessen their worth. AS will be readily observed in reading the letters, there are few of my mother's letters extant and the first three are signed with her sister's name. She makes her own explanation of this. As my father was a cavalry scout it is easy to understand that even the smallest impedimenta were impos'sible and it is only remarkable that mother's first four letters were*6. Book Description
Excerpt from Friendly Letters to Girl Friends These brief papers are not full disquisi tions; they are rather suggestions. As origi nally written, they were fitted to the limits of magazine publication, the treatment of their subjects only attempted as time and space available for simple letters might allow. In revising, they have been more or less filled out and extended; but even so are by no means offered now as exhaustive essays. It is hoped that they may convey something of real fresh thought to those who will think further and make wider application for them selves.
