Book Description
Excerpt from Letters on Religious Subjects IT is thought that the friendly and familiar letters which are here collected, would not only be instructive and pleasant to those of the same religious society with the writers of them, but might tend to shew the disposition and views of this Society, better than a treatise written purposely in the defence of the principles professed by it. The reader will perceive an unfeigned love and affection to have prevailed in the minds of the writers, one towards another; and that their principal view was to promote the best interests of their friends. It will be seen also, that in thus expressing their sentiments on religious subjects, without any expectation of having them made public, they agree in all the essential principles of the religion of their great Lord and Master Jesus Christ, in whom alone their hope of salvation was placed. Book Description
Excerpt from Thornton Abbey: A Series of Letters on Religious Subjects He was easy of access to the poorest persons of his vil lage, who ever found him ready to commiserate their dis tresses, and to relieve their wants. He judged, that no thing was better calculated te bring them within the pale of the church than those arguments to their senses, which the very dullest were capable - of understanding: and the event proved that he made a just estimate of human na ture. Book Description
Excerpt from Letters on Religious Subjects, Written by Divers Friends, Deceased, Vol. 1: First Published in London It may he remarked that though they do not use those ceremonies which some professors of the Christian religion seem to think necemary to retain, esteeming them not essential, and as being liable to abuse by too great a stress being placed upon them, to the neglect of the more vital part of religion; yet they desire to be united to the living body of Christ, which consists of members distinguished by various names and profes sions, and dispersed through different parts of the earth. These they desire to embrace, as brethren in Christ; partakers of the same excellent privileges, of which allthe children of the one universal Parent, and the one Saviour partake. Book Description
Excerpt from Counsels of an Invalid: Letters on Religious Subjects The Letters of George Wilson were among the most characteristic effusions of his genius. His intimate friends, with one consent, pro nounced him the most delightful letter-writer of their circle; and it has been justly felt by the public, that of the great and varied merits of his biography, perhaps the chief is the skill and taste with which these memorials have been made to tell the tale of his life, and to paint the full pic ture of his character. After a selection of corre spondence so copious and diversified, it may be thought by some that anything more is super 'fiuous. This objection will disappear when it is known how small a proportion the published lettersbear to the mass, not less interesting and attrac tive, which remains untouched. Probably many have hoped, with the writer of this Prefatory Note, that additional selections would be issued, and some, perhaps, have wished that, in such a case, these should be less miscellaneous and fragment ary than was demanded by the laws of biography, and should rather revolve around some one topic of central interest; while of all such topics, there can have been little difference of Opinion that religion deserved the preference, both from its own paramount importance, and from the quali fications, in all respects high, in some singular, of the writer for treating it with success in the form of letters. Book Description
Excerpt from A Collection of Letters on the Most Interesting and Important Subjects, and on Several Occasions Religion, or Church Communion is in its true Nature, both external and internal, which are thus united, and thus distinguished; the one is the outward Sign, the other is the inward Truth signified by it: The one never was, nor ever can be, in its true State, without the other. The inward Truth, or Church, is Re generation, or the Life, Spirit, and Power of Christ, quickened and brought to life, in the Soul. The outward Sign, or Church, is that outward Form, or manner of Life, that bears full witness to the Truth of this re generated Life of Christ, formed or revealed in the Soul. The inward Truth gives forth its outward proper Manifestations of itself, and these Manifestations bring forth the true outward Church, and make it to be visible, and outwardly known. Book Description
Excerpt from Letters Upon Divers Subjects in Theology: Addressed to Licentiates, or Candidates, for the Gospel Ministry, and the American Youth in General Perhaps my style of writing may seem not only dif ferent, but even contrary to that which is generally used by the men called Divines, with which I am not concerned: inasmuch as I confess myself not only no imitator and admirer of the popular school Theology, but an opposer of it as such - by whose labor, I judge the Christian religion to be so far from being bettered, that it is rather destroyed.
