The Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh, Regarding the System of Education Pursued at the High School There are two principal avenues to knowledge - the study of words and the study of things. But words are but the arbitrary signs of ideas, and have no value independent of those ideas. To account the mere knowledge of words, therefore, as wisdom, is to mistake the cask for the wine, and the casket for the gem. I say all this, because knowledge in words is often. Extolled be yond its just merits, and put for all wisdom, while knowledge of things, especially of the productions of nature, is derided as if it were mere folly. - Kirby and Spence' s Introduction to Ento mology, vol. But we have been so long accustomed to attach a high value to classical education as the medium of liberal know ledge, without reference to the change that has taken place in Europe within the last two hun dred years, that it still holds the same place as when all kn owledge was exclusively confined to the dead languages. We still cling to the ladder which has raised us to the eminence, forgetting that when the ascent is attained we might start from a new elevation.
