Let's visit Mia - Zu Besuch bei Mia (bilingual picture book: English - German)A lovely question and answer story - participation book / interactive picture bookMia is very excited about your visit. She wants to get to know you better and that is why he asks you so many questions: Which toy do you like best? What is your favourite food? And which costume do you wear when someone comes to visit you? Talk to Mia and tell her something about yourself - a lovely interactive story for children ages 3 and older. Literacy: Interactive and dialogic readingThe participation book "Let's visit Mia / Zu Besuch bei Mia" helps to improve and encourage your child's language skills using the dialogical reading method. Dialogic reading motivates children to tell stories independently, which improves their vocabulary and language skills. In comparison to normal reading, children take an active role in dialogic reading. From telling the story in their own words, to questions about the book's content, to sharing about their own experiences, there are many ways to encourage children to tell stories through dialogic reading with picture books. In the question and answer story "Let's visit Mia / Zu Besuch bei Mia", the protagonist wants to know more about your child. By answering the questions, your child is actively involved in the conversation. The story offers first contact to dialogic reading. The interactive picture book can also be used in the context of literacy education in the childcare center or kindergarten A child-friendly mix of simple and more challenging questions makes answering them fun for children from 3 years on. Bilingual education and language learningWith a bilingual picture book, children can listen to the story in two languages and are encouraged to participate in both languages. From the first language experience, a language learning support up to the use in bilingual households, bilingual picture books can be used in many ways for narrative education and early language learning. Support your child in telling and participating in the story With little help - without giving away the solution to Mia's question - you can help your child to answer the question. Not all children are already familiar with interactive books or dialogic reading and therefore they need your help. Please give your child enough time to think about each question Mia asks and to give the answer independently. If your child has difficulties with a question, you can always rephrase the question or help answering it. Book Description
In his testimony on his survival in Auschwitz, Primo Levi said "our language lacks words to express this offense, the demolition of a man." If language, if any language, lacks the words to express the experience of the concentration camps, how does one write the unspeakable? How can it then be translated? The limits of representation and translation seem to be closely linked when it comes to writing about the Holocaust--whether as fiction, memoir, testimony--a phenomenon the current study examines. While there is a spate of literature about the impossibility to represent the Holocaust, not much has been written on the links between translation in its specific linguistic sense, translation studies, and the Holocaust, a niche this volume aims to fill.

Book Description
This book investigates the political, social, cultural and economic implications of self-translation in multilingual spaces in Europe. Engaging with the ‘power turn’ in translation studies contexts, it offers innovative perspectives on the role of self-translators as cultural and ideological mediators. The authors explore the unequal power relations and centre-periphery dichotomies of Europe’s minorised languages, literatures and cultures. They recognise that the self-translator’s double affiliation as author and translator places them in a privileged position to challenge power, to negotiate the experiences of the subaltern and colonised, and to scrutinise conflicting minorised vs. hegemonic cultural identities. Three main themes are explored in relation to self-translation: hegemony and resistance; self-minorisation and self-censorship; and collaboration, hybridisation and invisibility. This edited collection will appeal to scholars and students working on translation, transnational and postcolonial studies, and multilingual and multicultural identities.

Book Description
The German lacuna in Edward Said’s 'Orientalism' has produced varied studies of German cultural and academic Orientalisms. So far the domains of German politics and scholarship have not been conflated to probe the central power/knowledge nexus of Said’s argument. Seeking to fill this gap, the diplomatic career and scholarly-literary productions of the centrally placed Friedrich Rosen serve as a focal point to investigate how politics influenced knowledge generated about the “Orient” and charts the roles knowledge played in political decision-making regarding extra-European regions. This is pursued through analyses of Germans in British imperialist contexts, cultures of lowly diplomatic encounters in Middle Eastern cities, Persian poetry in translation, prestigious Orientalist congresses in northern climes, leveraging knowledge in high-stakes diplomatic encounters, and the making of Germany’s Islam policy up to the Great War. Politics drew on bodies of knowledge and could promote or hinder scholarship. Yet, scholars never systemically followed empire in its tracks but sought their own paths to cognition. On their own terms or influenced by “Oriental” savants they aligned with politics or challenged claims to conquest and rule.

Book Description
This volume represents the first large-scale effort to address topics of translation in Russian contexts across the disciplinary boundaries of Slavic Studies and Translation Studies, thus opening up new perspectives for both fields. Leading scholars from Eastern and Western Europe offer a comprehensive overview of Russian translation history examining a variety of domains, including literature, philosophy and religion. Divided into three parts, this book highlights Russian contributions to translation theory and demonstrates how theoretical perspectives developed within the field help conceptualize relevant problems in cultural context in pre-Soviet, Soviet, and post-Soviet Russia. This transdisciplinary volume is a valuable addition to an under-researched area of translation studies and will appeal to a broad audience of scholars and students across the fields of Translation Studies, Slavic Studies, and Russian and Soviet history.
