Book Description
Eric Foster, the top student at the best perfume school in France, creates a scent based on the fragrance the Queen of Sheba wore to seduce King Solomon. When he tests it surreptitiously at a gathering of glitterati in Paris, the results surpass his wildest dreams. It's an aphrodisiac of astonishing potency.Eric sees fame and fortune on his horizon, until he is kicked out of the school for a theft he did not commit. Disgraced and miserable, he now slogs through a mind-numbing job with a New York manufacturer of fragrance additives for supermarket products. His only respite comes from moonlighting - with his three-legged bloodhound, Daisy - as a forensic scent expert for the NYPD. But when a knockoff of his perfume surfaces as the only link in a series of passion-driven homicides, Eric becomes the prime suspect. Desperate to prove his innocence, he reluctantly teams up with Tanya, a sardonic chemist from the Crime Lab, to find the counterfeiter and decipher why the knockoff is killing people.Eric's quest pits him against violent adversaries on three continents. In the battle for survival, his one advantage is his extraordinary sense of smell.Aphrodesia was a quarter-finalist in the 2012 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award competition.

Manuale Typographicum
Author: Hermann Zapf
Publisher: Cambridge, Mass : M.I.T. Press
ISBN:
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 264
Book Description
One hundred typographic pages are exhibited in this book, consisting of alphabets and quotations printed in various type styles. The quotations selected by the author concern types and printing, are from the past and the present, and are in 16 languages (translations are provided). Hermann Zapf is a noted type designer and he himself originally devised many of the type faces used here. Other faces were taken from the fonts of the Stempel foundry in Frankfurt/Main and historic faces came from that foundry's archives. The author has also designed the page layouts, choosing for this manual a horizontal format. The purpose of the manual is "to show the myriad possibilities of the expressiveness and beauty of type, whether individually or in massed text, by the use of purely typographic means." The original English edition of this work was limited to 1000 copies. In making it available to a larger audience, Paul Standard's comment, printed in the original, becomes more pertinent still: "In a world grown noisy and clamorous, reading remains among the very few quiet pleasures left to man. The present work hopes to be considered an attempt to bring a body of critical and expository comment to the widest circle of readers—comment upon every contributory element in bookmaking and printing generally, upon the design of letter forms and their disposition on the page. The very sight of so many different languages on these successive pages is itself a humanizing experience, suggesting as it does a striving for unity while preserving linguistic diversity by means of the printer's art." This "critical and expository comment" has been culled from a wide international range of writers, including both masters of literature and masters of the art of printing.

Paper Passion
Author: Geza Schoen
Publisher:
ISBN: 9783869305011
Category : Paper
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Paper Passion Perfume captures the unique bouquet of freshly printed books. Designed by boutique perfumer Geza Schoen in close consultation with Gerhard Steidl and in collaboration with Wallpaper* magazine, the perfume expresses that peculiar mix of paper and ink which gives a book its unmistakable aroma, along with the fresh scent which a book opened for the first time releases. Schoen spent days in the depths of the paper-filled Steidl headquarters in Göttingen, sifting through books, papers samples and inks, to find inspiration for a perfume that is true to books, wearable, and which ages well in time - just like a good book. It took Schoen seventeen trials to preserve in his words, "the right balance between the smell of paper as such and an enjoyable perfumistic aesthetic". The elaborate packaging of Paper Passion Perfume does more than justice to the perfume within. The packaging is a real book with a hidden cut-out compartment in which the bottle sits. The first pages of the book contain texts on the pleasures of paper and the Paper Passion project by Nobel Laureate Günter Grass, Karl Lagerfeld, Geza Schoen and Wallpaper* Editor-in-Chief Tony Chambers. The end product is a unique perfume, an homage to the luxurious sensuality of books and in Karl Lagerfeld's words, "the silent smell of paper".
