Multinationals and Maldevelopment
Author: L. Alschuler
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0230378269
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 301
Book Description
An important contribution to the increasingly topical debate over which development strategies work best for newly industrializing countries. This new edition of a highly successful book, not previously available in paperback, offers a thorough and up-to-date assessment of development theories leading to clear policy prescriptions. There are two completely new chapters on the current debate on the East Asian Model and the different development path taken in Latin America, and on the New Comparative Political Economy. Alschuler demonstrates that a new conceptual framework, incorporating features of dependency theory and world system analysis, is needed in order to capture the complex interaction between multinationals, development strategies and class alliances and their impact on development.

The Multinational Enterprise and Legal Control
Author: Cynthia Day Wallace
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004481125
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 1359
Book Description
This long-awaited new book from Cynthia Day Wallace picks up the thread of her best-selling Legal Control of the Multinational Enterprise: National Regulatory Techniques and the Prospects for International Controls. In the present work she applies herself to legal and pragmatic aspects of control surrounding MNE operations. The primary focus is on legal and administrative techniques and measures practised by host states to control – transparently or less so – foreign MNE activity within their territories, or even extraterritorially when effects are felt within national boundaries. The primary geographic focus is the six most investment-intensive industrialized states (namely,Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United States and the United Kingdom). At the same time an important message of the present study is precisely the implication for the developing countries as well as for the emerging market economies of central and eastern Europe - and even Asian nations besides Japan, because it is the sharing of this very ‘experience of years’ that can best serve to facilitate a fuller participation on the part of the up-and-coming economies in the same global market place.

The Case for Multinational Federalism
Author: Alain-G. Gagnon
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135211418
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 165
Book Description
Throughout the world, liberal-democracies are grappling with increasing claims made in the name of minority national, socio-cultural and ethno-cultural identities that seek greater recognition in the institutions of the nation-state. This work inserts itself into debates centred on diversity through a normative and empirical analytical assessment of the political sociology of multinational democracies. The main thread of the arguments put forward is that federalism, in both its institutional manifestations and its sociological properties, constitutes a promising avenue for the management of cohabitating political communities and for the affirmation of collective identities within states that are constituted by two or more nations. Author Alain-G Gagnon develops his argument by contending that the federal principle allows for the exercise of advanced democratic practices within nation-states, permitting internal nations to openly affirm the bases of adherence to a common political project. At the same time, he argues that federalism nourishes the development of distinct collective traditions that serve to benefit all parties to the association. It is concluded that only in such a scenario will the elusive pursuit of an authentic and shared loyalty underpin multination states and ensure their stability, in contrast to the instrumental sentiments of belonging engendered by procedural territorial federal models. Focusing primarily on the Canadian case, this book also draws inspiration from other federal states (Belgium, the United States), as well as federalizing states (Spain, the United Kingdom). It will be of keen interest to students and scholars of Politics, European Studies, along with Nationalism and Federalism Studies.

Multinational Federations
Author: Michael Burgess
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134120869
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 265
Book Description
This is the first comparative volume available on multinational federations, bringing together an international range of experts on federalism. Multinational federations are federal states intended to provide a framework that can accommodate, manage and resolve some of the most intractable political conflicts of our time that emerge from identity politics: those that stem from competing national visions, whether within or between established states. Featuring key experts in the field such as Michael Burgess, Alain Gagnon and Ronald Watts, this unique book draws on a wide geographical range of country studies including Belgium, Canada, India, Malaysia, Spain, Russia, Cyprus, India, Switzerland and the EU in order to illustrate the pivotal relationship between federalism and nationalism. In so doing, it addresses the practical relevance of federalism to the new political recognition of difference and diversity in the specific form of national minoritarianism. Multinational Federations will be of strong interest to students and researchers of federalism, democracy and nationalism.
