Book Description
How to foresee the unknown and master the unexpected? Ancient people tried to answer those questions by interpreting signs considered as divine messages. In this volume, the writers compare and examine this manifold questioning in the polytheistic and monotheistic societies of the ancient Mediterranean Sea. In the first place, it is shown how signs were ritually constructed within instituted practice of divination ; second, how, although some spontaneous natural phenomena appeared out of any instituted context, may nevertheless constitute omens or monition ; third, how the gods’ intervention may reveal a sort of intention in the course of national history or individual life ; finally, the essays study the epistemology of signs at work in some philosophical or theological elaborations, which may enlighten the tension between oracular evidence and ritual control of signs, and between revealed facts and reasoning arguments intending to neutralize the injunctions of the divine.

L'Algèbre des signes
Author: Robert Marty
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 9027278237
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 429
Book Description

Category : Fiction

Pages : 80
Book Description
In a world of tension. Against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine. I wanted to know the fate of a few nations. To do so, I consulted a voodoo priest specializing in Fâ divination to find out what the years 2025 and 2026 hold in store for the USA, France and Belgium. In the voodoo cult, when you need to know the future or even the hidden things of the past and present, you turn to Fâ. In West Africa, among those who remain attached to tradition, no important decision is taken without consulting the Fâ. Despite the advent of Christianity and Islam, the vast majority of the peoples of the world retain the traditions of their ancestors. This tradition is Voodoo or Vodun, found in Benin, Togo, Ghana and Nigeria, among the Fon, Gouns, Ewe, Aja and Yoruba peoples.

Liturgy as Revelation
Author: Philip Caldwell
Publisher: Fortress Press
ISBN: 1451489471
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 416
Book Description
A critical issue in modern Catholic theology has been the relationship between the doctrine of revelation and the church’s liturgical and sacramental practice. This volume argues that although in the twentieth century Catholic theology increasingly recognized the centrality of Christology—particularly the person of Christ—as the locus of revelation and drew out the crucial implications of Christ as the revelation of God, it was slow to connect this revelatory dynamic with the encounter that occurs within the sacramental space of the liturgy, most notably the Eucharist. Taking the decline of the neoscholastic enterprise in Catholic theology and the challenges posed by modernism as his point of departure, Philip Caldwell traces the evolution of the Catholic theology of revelation in the twentieth century and the vital role played by the liturgical and sacramental renewal movements in reimagining this pivotal theological category. Examining the specific contributions of René Latourelle, Avery Dulles, Salvatore Marsilli, and Gustave Martelet against a background of pre-conciliar ressourcement theology, this volume provides a comprehensive account of why a Trinitarian and Christological construal of liturgy and sacraments as revelation is key to the vision that informed Vatican II and offers constructive theological and ecclesial possibilities for the future.
