La notion de reconstruction rationnelle, qui se présente d’abord comme la conquête d’une certaine tradition de la pensée philosophique de la science », devrait permettre aussi d’éclairer le travail de l’historien des sciences : c’est la thèse de ce travail. La philosophie des sciences contemporaine, par le biais de l’épistémologie poppérienne et du positivisme logique, a abordé ce problème uniquement sous l’angle de la méthodologie, manquant ainsi l’explication et l’approche historique des reconstructions. Seule une partie de la philosophie des sciences, dans sa version historiciste, représentée par Kuhn et Lakatos, pour ne citer que ces deux auteurs, considère que l’explication rationnelle, et la compréhension historique que l’on attend viennent d’une « réorganisation historicisante » des découvertes et des connaissances scientifiques du passé. Appliquant à l’analyse méthodologique, l’étude des systèmes scientifiques (copernicien et newtonien), mais revenant également sur l’heuristique des mathématiques, ce travail vise à montrer que l’on peut parfaitement combiner réflexion méthodologique et étude des faits historiques ; seule perspective permettant d’interpréter et de comprendre réellement les reconstructions rationnelles en histoire des sciences.
