Forced into an alliance with the English, he soon found that he held the balance of power between England and France - reflected in the final crucial phase of the Hundred Years War. Under Philip the Good, grandson of the founder of the duchy's power, Burgundy reached its apogee. Professor Vaughan portrays not only Philip the Good himself, perhaps the most attractive personality among the four great dukes, butthe workings of the court and of one of the most efficent - if not necessarily the most popular - administrations in fifteenth-century Europe. The complex diplomatic history of Philip the Good's long ducal reign (1419-1467) occupies much of the book, in particular Burgundy's relations with England and France. And due attention is given to the great flowering of artistic life in Burgundy which made Philip's court at Dijon an important cultural centre in the period immediately preceding the Renaissance. All this is based on the close study of the considerable surviving archives of Philip's civil service, and on the chronicles and letters of the period. ZSF9IKN92, title based on a random code, is a comic book with no text (540 pages), inspired by my "Mars Girl" novel, and the complex graphic composition and the narration of which allows the reader to give several interpretations. The style of drawing favors more expressiveness than technique. This graphic novel, or art novel, has been made in 2009 and 2010. The achievement followed a personal steady maturation of my paradoxical ideas on comic books as an ancient art, according to the parameter pairs: page and composition, page and painting, series and painting, chronology and atemporality. The look becomes fragmented. The scenario's memory tends to blur. Without a word, the graphics speak for themselves, as the content's body and flesh. The number of possible stories is multiplying for this variety of reasons.

Laura Weigert brings together a wealth of visual artifacts and practices to explore this tradition of late medieval performance located not in 'theaters' but in churches, courts, and city streets and squares. By stressing the theatricality rather than the realism of fifteenth-century visual culture and the spectacular rather than the devotional nature of its effects, she offers a new way of thinking about late medieval representation and spectatorship. She shows how images that ostensibly document medieval performance instead revise its characteristic features to conform to a playgoing experience that was associated with classical antiquity. This retrospective vision of the late medieval performance tradition contributed to its demise in sixteenth-century France and promoted assumptions about medieval theater that continue to inform the contemporary disciplines of art and theater history.
