Book Description
Within a relatively brief period of time (1690-1705), Madame D'Aulnoy created a rich and diviersified collection of fairy tales which rank second in importance only to those of Charles Perrault. Through close readings of the various tales, Professor DeGraff demonstrates how the interplay of structural forms and themes can best be understood within the framework of psychological intepretation. This study is above all a sensitive and innovative approach to an author whose writings have not yet received the critical acclaim they so justly deserve. This work is accessible to specialists and non-specialists alike and will appeal to proponents of women's studies. -- Amazon.com.

Book Description
It is a common belief that in France the study of medieval literature as literature only began to gain recognition as a valid occupation for the scholar during the nineteenth century. It is well known that historians of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries looked to the literary productions of the Middle Ages for materials useful to their researches, but it is only recently that the remarkable frequency of this reference has been appreciated and that scholars have become aware of an unbroken tradition of what might best be described as historically ori ented medievalism stretching from the sixteenth century to our own. The eighteenth century has drawn the greatest number of curious to this field, for it is evident that the surprisingly extensive researches undertaken then do much to explain the progress made a century later by the most celebrated generation of medievalistst. Very slowly we are coming to see the value of the contribution made by little known schol ars like La Curne de Sainte-Palaye, Etienne Barbazan and the Comte de Caylus.

Book Description
Broaching the notion of the 'frame' from a variety of analytic perspectives, and employing a range of approaches, this collection of articles engages with contemporary debates on text and image relations, literary reception and translation, narratology and cinematographic technique. The various contributions to this collection provide new readings in their respective fields, and share a common concern with exploring the productive and problematic notion of the 'frame' and of 'framing' in a wide variety of cultural media in French Studies. This interdisciplinary analysis of literary and theoretical texts, visual art and film allows for fruitful connections to be made at the level of analysis of themes and of methodology. It thus provides material that is of interest both to specialists in these fields, and also to those seeking a more general introduction to each area. This collection of articles is selected from the proceedings of the 'Framed! in French Studies' workshop, held at the Institut Français in London in February 2006.

Book Description
This unique book examines the career of Michel Ocelot, from his earliest works to his latest research and productions, including an interview regarding his latest film Le Pharaon, le Sauvage et la Princesse (2022). The book highlights the director’s role in the panorama of contemporary animated cinema and his relationship with the tradition, both artistic and cinematographic. The book carefully analyses the ethical and social nature of Ocelot’s work to underscore the duality of the director’s oeuvre, both artistic and social, using an interdisciplinary approach that blends film and aesthetic criticism with gender studies and decolonial thought. Particular attention will be given to the themes of multiculturalism, discrimination, and treatment of women, which are at the centre of many current cultural debates. The book will be of interest to an audience of experts, animation enthusiasts, and film scholars, as well as to a wider readership interested in learning about the poetics of Kirikou’s father.

Book Description
At once political institution, lived experience, and discursive figure, exile defined Louis XIV's absolutist France. The Place of Exile connects the movements of both people and books through and around this absolutist territory in order to understand the deliberate construction of real and imagined marginal cultures. Four case studies of everyday, sociable writing called leisure literature guide us through an ever-widening territory of disaffection and alienation, from the center of absolutism at Louis XIV's first court to Europe's international communities of refugees.
