This illustrated ( 160 images) and referenced book honours and celebrates Leonardo's life and accomplishments in art, science and his philosophy on dialectics, linear perspective, geometric variations, divine proportion, vision, perception and anamorphosis. It highlights and commemorates his friendship with the Franciscan friar and mathematician, Fra Luca Pacioli. The author focuses particularly on the subjects, objects, pictorial codes and hidden messages contained within the mysterious portrait entitled Fra Luca Pacioli and Student that is held at the National Museum of Capodimonte in Naples and officially attributed to the Venetian painter Jacopo de' Barbari. However, this official attribution is questionable because the painting shows all the typical signatures, mysteries, anagrams, geometric proportions, symbols and praxis of Leonardo da Vinci. It is a fantastical Renaissance masterpiece drawn and painted with science, wit, guile and artistry by an innovator communicating with puzzling rebuses and psychological imagery. Kulski describes and analyses the science, mathematics, geometry, symbolism, history and pictorial codification of the portraiture of the Franciscan friar Luca Pacioli, the condottiero and jouster Galeazzo Sanseverino, Leonardo's signature rhombicuboctahedron hanging in space from a red thread, an enigmatic black fly, together with a secretive anagram, IACO. B AR. VIGEN NIS. P.1495, that encodes the political intrigues in the Duchy of Milan during the time of Leonardo da Vinci. The exposition explores Leonardo's 5-year working relationship with Fra Luca Pacioli on Euclidian geometry, regular solids and the divine proportion, together with the support and intrigues of their powerful and rich sponsors, Galeazzo Sanseverino and his father-in-law Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan, who inspired the portraiture. This book is dedicated to the Italian Renaissance art researcher Carla Glori who deciphered the mysterious code associated with the menacing black fly on the yellowed, encrypted cartouche and proved beyond reasonable doubt that the painting originated from the studio of Leonardo da Vinci when he still was entangled in various disputes with his other major art works, The Virgin of the Rocks, The Last Supper, Mona Lisa and the giant equestrian statue known as Colossus.The 21 chapters also contain 160 images and a bibliography of 250 cited books, journal references and Internet web pages.

This is a facsimile (in black and white) of De Divina Proportione ("On the Divine Proportion"), printed June 1st 1509 in Venice, of which only two copies reached our XXIth century. It had to become one among the most famous books in the world, but not only because it was partly made by Leonardo da Vinci and printed during his lifetime. He drew fifty nine of the sketches it includes, which form the earliest work from the artist's hand to appear in print. Luca Bartolomeo de Pacioli (1445-1517), Italian mathematician and Franciscan friar, wrote the full text of it. He and Leonardo da Vinci set forth a way of describing the visible world in terms of its common geometrical elements, what he calls the "divine proportion", equally known as the "Golden ratio". Even the layout of this book, which we may find somehow surprising today, Pacioli and da Vinci drafted it on a geometrical grid with respect to the divine proportion. De Divina proportione also is one of the most remarkable illustrated books published in the sixteenth century. Based on the writings of Plato, Euclid, and Vitruvius, and arguing his thesis by means of exegesis and the generous use of evocative illustration, Pacioli claims that this proportional element is shared by a variety of solid bodies, from human anatomy to architectural forms and even to the composition of the letter's design in the Roman alphabet. Today we don't know how many copies of De Divina Proportione were printed in Venice by printer Paganinus de Paganinus. Two surviving copies only exist, one at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, and the second at the Bibliothèque de Genève in Geneva, Switzerland. For the intersection of art and science and the active engagement of the pre-eminent genius of the period, Leonardo da Vinci, this is one of the most iconic works of the Italian Renaissance. The clarity of both the written material and Leonardo's diagrams gave the book a popularity beyond mathematical circles. It has since then been reprinted several times and translated in many languages.

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a highly polymorphic and diverse multigene locus in all jawed vertebrate species that has an integral role in adaptive/innate immune systems, transplantation, and infectious and autoimmune diseases. The MHC supra-locus in mammalian vertebrates is usually partitioned into three distinct regions, known as classes I, II, and III, which, to varying extents, can be found conserved in nonmammalian jawed vertebrates, such as bony fish, amphibians, and bird lineages. The MHC gene region is characterized particularly by the expression of class I and class II glycoproteins that bind peptides derived from intracellular or extracellular antigens to circulating T-cells. While this expressed antigenic specificity remains the predominant interest with respect to MHC function and polymorphism in a population, a broader concept has emerged that examines the MHC as a multifunctional polymorphic controller that facilitates and regulates genome diversity with a much greater array of functions and effects than just MHC-restricted antigen recognition. This volume of 19 reprints presented by various experts and collected from the Special Issue of Cells on “MHC in Health and Disease” covers a broad range of topics on the genomic diversity of the MHC regulatory system in various vertebrate species, including MHC class I, II, and III genes; innate and adaptive immunity; neurology; transplantation; haplotypes; infectious and autoimmune diseases; fecundity; conservation; allelic lineages; and evolution.
