El presente trabajo expone los resultados de un análisis empírico cualitativo sobre la cultura como un constructo discursivo en el contexto del aprendizaje y la enseñanza de español como lengua extranjera (ELE). Tras una discusión de los presupuestos teóricos y de numerosos documentos normativos que sitúan la cultura hispanohablante en el contexto de una lengua pluricéntrica, analiza la construcción de la cultura en un corpus diacrónico de manuales. Por otro lado, ingresa en las mentes de futuros enseñantes de ELE para iluminar su concepción del lugar de la cultura en relación con el español, de la interculturalidad, y de sus criterios para seleccionar temas o áreas de la cultura para la tarea docente. El estudio concluye con una cartografía del discurso que delimita el aprendizaje y la enseñanza de ELE en el contexto analizado y señala puntos para la acción de la formación docente, así como desafíos para la investigación.
